Her Story

About Brooke

Brooke Boeding is a counselor in higher education with nearly 30 years of experience across K-12 and community college settings. Her career path began with teaching preschool before shifting to counseling, including work at her former high school and later at institutions such as Gavilan College and Merced College. As dean of student services at Merced College, she led the development of success teams and an early alert system that boosted student success rates by 27% in the first semester and 62% after one year. She recently stepped down from administration to return to direct student counseling at a new college in Yuba City, California, prioritizing work-life balance and student-focused decision making. Brooke earned her master's degree in counseling from Fresno State in 2003 and her doctorate in educational leadership from CSU Stanislaus in 2017. She is currently pursuing an MFT degree through National University to support a future private practice. Her professional affiliations include the American Counselors Association, and she has supported initiatives such as Wounded Warriors and Special Olympics. She attributes her success to early training in martial arts for focus and dedication, along with the support of women colleagues who share her values. Brooke emphasizes integrity in all decisions, always prioritizing what is best for students over politics or popularity.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Brooke

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the dedication and focus instilled from a young age through martial arts, combined with the support and camaraderie of other women in my life who have held me up and shared values and goals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice was to make every decision with what's best for your kid first, which I adapted to my professional career by always focusing decisions on what's best for the students.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay connected with others in the field to learn from them, maintain your drive, and always focus decisions on what's best for the students rather than getting into politics.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the fear of budget cuts due to the economic situation, as we are state-federal funded, which impacts the ability to be creative in assisting students and leads to programs potentially being cut.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Standing on my own integrity and value system is integral. I believe in being honest, despise lying and game playing, and make decisions aligned with my values even if it means not being the most popular person.
