Brooke Smith

Senior Buyer and Commercial Energy Broker
United Power Group
Dallas, TX 75065

Brooke Smith is a Senior Buyer and Commercial Energy Broker at United Power Group, based in Dallas, Texas. In her role, she works closely with commercial clients across the deregulated areas of Texas to secure long-term electricity contracts that are structured for stability and efficiency. Brooke negotiates directly with suppliers, leverages portfolio volume for competitive pricing, and ensures that each contract aligns with how businesses actually use energy, protecting operating budgets and supporting long-term financial stability.

Brooke’s journey in the energy industry began from the ground up. She started as a lead generator making cold calls and eventually advanced to the closing team, building deep expertise in relationship management and problem-solving along the way. A pivotal moment in her career came during the 2019 Texas freeze, where she witnessed many businesses struggle due to poorly structured energy contracts. This experience strengthened her commitment to helping commercial accounts navigate complex electricity markets and avoid costly mistakes.

Although Brooke earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Texas Tech University, originally preparing for a career in counseling, she discovered that her skills in listening, advising, and connecting with people translated seamlessly into the energy sector. Today, she focuses on proactively managing client renewals, monitoring market trends, and delivering energy solutions that save businesses money and ensure reliability. Her dedication to client success has earned her a strong reputation and numerous referrals throughout Texas.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the guidance of strong mentors, the support of a great team, and a personal commitment to continuous improvement. I’m highly goal-driven and actively pursue ongoing education to expand my skill set and stay adaptable in an industry that’s constantly evolving.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to embrace challenges, because that’s how you truly learn. I was also reminded to always be open and honest, treat people fairly, and practice being a good listener—qualities that build trust and strong professional relationships.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to be confident and stand tall with pride. Don’t be intimidated by others—know your worth—and always strive for excellence in everything you do.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

come from everything going on in the energy market - oil prices are going up, data centers are coming to Texas, and we have just the one grid, so prices are rising. My main focus is making sure we get ahead of people's renewals so we can get them their contracts renewed when we can secure the best terms and the best rates. A lot of times, people aren't aware of how to structure their contracts when they just call the supplier themselves and set it up. So a lot of the challenge is really helping businesses clean up the way that their current structure is and putting them in an agreement that will benefit them long-term. I work with a lot of clients and get a lot of referrals, but the key is making sure businesses understand how to properly structure their contracts for long-term stability.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are staying positive and spreading that positivity to my team, being a dedicated mentor to others, leading by example, and making a meaningful difference wherever I can.
