Her Story
About Brooke
I've been dancing since I was a kid and received professional training from the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company around age [AGE]. I joined DCDC2, which is very similar to Alvin Ailey - it's a predominantly African-American-based dance company out of Dayton, Ohio - when I was [AGE], just about a week after graduating from high school. After staying there for about a year, I branched off and used social media to showcase my choreography. This led to work with MTV, PBS, and an opening act for MC Lyte during her Stop the Violence program in Dayton. I've taught Zumba classes, worked in fitness, and now I showcase my dancing with a focus on dances that come from parts of Africa, which I share on TikTok where it's done very well. I also have a background in event marketing, brand awareness, and brand ambassador work. One of my biggest accomplishments was doing brand work for the Oscars through Disney for 2 years - they had 100 candidates and I was picked as the only one who was not local to the area. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 18, and I chose to use this as a way to educate others and show that despite whatever type of disability or disadvantage you have, if you stay focused on what you really want to accomplish in life, you can be successful and make a difference. Today, I work as a bartender for weddings, catering, and parties, while continuing to create content through TikTok, mostly showcasing different dances from parts of the world. What I love most about this journey is connecting with people from around the world - it's usually the stuff that you don't think much of about yourself that people are just in awe of.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You gotta just start. Start somewhere. I have to say for myself, I was learning as I went. I didn't really have the resources, I didn't have the money, I was having to work two jobs, and I would drive down to Cincinnati to make some extra money, and to Columbus to make extra money to fund some of my stuff. I was learning along the way, but just start. Focus on something you love, something that you're passionate about, and everything will come to you. I know that sounds really corny, a little cheesy, but seriously, start. Figure out what you like, and go from there.
