What do you attribute your success to?
I think a lot of my success comes from my childhood. Growing up as an only child, I’ve always known what I want. With a lot of ambition and growing up in a rural community, I’ve been lucky to dream big and find ways to build a meaningful career that makes an impact in communities across Kansas.
Life didn’t always go as I planned. I thought I’d be a stay-at-home mom, but seasons of life and unexpected challenges gave me the chance to get my feet wet with Farm Bureau Financial Services and follow a path I’m truly proud of. I love this work, and here I am.
My husband is my biggest supporter, and having that support at home is essential, especially with children. My job requires a lot of travel, so he’s not just my husband—he’s my biggest fan and my rock. We’re also fortunate to have a strong network of family close by who help and support us along the way.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When asked about people who have made a significant impact on her career journey, Brooke first and foremost highlighted her wonderful husband, Matt. Despite his demanding work as a lineman and farmer/rancher, he provides immense support, especially given her frequent travel. Brooke describes Matt as her biggest fan and credits him with making it possible for her to balance work and family life. Together, they always find a way to support each other, and she is deeply grateful for his encouragement and partnership.
Brooke also wanted to acknowledge the managers who have shaped her professional growth. She considers herself fortunate to have had mentors from the very beginning, starting with the manager who took a chance on hiring her as a 20-year-old. One particularly special manager leveraged her strengths, helping her build confidence and elevate her leadership. That experience left a lasting impact and continues to inspire her growth. She is also appreciative of her current manager, who is deeply committed to fostering a positive culture and supportive environment. In just six months under his leadership, she has learned an enormous amount and looks forward to learning even more.
Overall, Brooke feels grateful to have worked with leaders and mentors who encouraged, challenged, and inspired her throughout her career.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I’ve been lucky. Find a company that aligns with your values, your morals, your goals, and your vision. When you find that company, you also find people who, for me, became more than colleagues—they became friends and a support system. I’ve been very fortunate to work for a company like Farm Bureau.
Be kind to everybody. I always tell people: you never know who your boss is going to be—it could very well be that colleague.
If you make a decision, it will cost you something. If it doesn’t, it’s not really a decision. Take the leap—it will only make you stronger.
Lean on your strengths—that’s crucial. I always coach others to focus on what they bring to the table and to continue expanding their skill sets.
You have to be where your feet are, but you also need to plan ahead and prepare for your next move. For me, pursuing additional licenses will open new doors down the road.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenge in the insurance market is the increase in claims, including catastrophic events, which, combined with inflation, has dramatically raised costs due to higher prices for materials and repairs. This creates difficulties for our client members, agents, and the company. Rising economic costs for many families put a strain on their finances, leaving less money to focus on a holistic plan and prepare for the future of their loved ones.
The opportunity, however, is significant. We have so much to offer, and everyone deserves to die with dignity. We are here to help make that possible.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I try to work with purpose. I try to be a servant. I work hard because it’s the right thing to do, and I want my kids to see the value of hard work and the value of a dollar. I don’t see that as much in children today, so a lot of what I do is to model for my kids what it means to do the right thing, serve others, and work with purpose in a way that is fulfilling.
I’m married to my husband, Matt, and we have two children. We live outside of Riley, Kansas, on a farm. Both of us grew up in agriculture, and it’s important to us to instill those values in our children for generations to come. Truly, our children are my biggest blessing, and I spend every day loving every minute of being their mom—even on the hard days. I love being outdoors, spending time with my family, and enjoy gardening, camping, and all kinds of family time on the farm.
