About Caitlyn
Caitlyn OConnell serves as a Senate Finance Fellow in Albany, New York, having been nominated by the New York Senate. In this role, she collaborates with other policy professionals to review financials for major policy shifts across the state. She brings four and a half years of experience in her field, including an internship at the government relations firm Brown and Weinraub, a procedural position with the New York State Assembly where she helped process legislation and worked with assembly members and senators, and work at an Albany lobbying firm handling workforce development, energy, and transportation issues. Her expertise centers on policy writing, legislation, and New York politics. Caitlyn earned a BA in Political Communications from Siena College, now known as Siena University, and an MPA from the University at Albany's Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. She also holds a New York State certification as a master in legislative retrieval systems. Among her honors are membership in Pi Gamma Mu for ranking in the top 35 percent of her class, presidential membership in the National Society of Leadership and Success based on a 3.3 GPA, and serving as vice president of Phi Alpha Delta. She remains active in Phi Alpha Delta, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the National Honor Society for Professionalism and Success, and volunteers with the American Mock Trial Association.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My family's been a really big part of my success. They've really motivated me. Those around me and my support system has been a huge part of my success. Continuously showing up, working with those around me, and communication is key.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what makes you happy and excel in the areas that you are the strongest in. Put those areas towards what you want to do. Take the parts of life that you're most passionate about and turn those into a line of work for yourself.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be true to yourself, work hard, and networking is key. You never know who you're going to end up talking with and gaining insight from. Take advice and be open to new opportunities coming your way.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenge of working full-time while getting master's degree full-time for a year and a half, requiring time management and relying on support system. Opportunities include helping with prior school Siena, American Mock Trial Association, attending press conferences, and representing Siena College in D.C. through Phi Alpha Delta.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Staying true to myself and who I am. Hard work can get you miles and really excel you. Working hard and seeing the results of that is something I've always felt very strongly about.
