About Calista

Calista Boyd is a retired special education teacher based in Houston/Trinity, Texas, with 30 years of experience developing career curriculums and supporting students with diverse learning needs. She earned her bachelor's degree in 2001 from the Teachers Education Association in Texas and became a certified teacher, a credential required for teaching in the state. Throughout her career, Boyd advocated for students, including helping one individual transition out of special education to achieve success, culminating in graduation with honors from A&M University. In addition to her classroom work, she spent over 13 years helping establish Friends of Down Syndrome, where she taught reading, social skills, and vocational abilities through field trips for adults aged 18 and above. Now retired, she remains active by providing counseling on Zoom and leading a reading club focused on vocabulary and comprehension for slow readers, always tailoring instruction to each student's unique learning style, whether auditory, visual, or interest-based. Boyd attributes her success to the support of friends and the Hurt family, who provided financial assistance and housing, building on the foundation from her mother.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Calista

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the support of many friends and the Hurt family who provided unimaginable support financially and a place to stay, as well as the foundation my mother gave me even though she passed when I was young. I was a single parent with no family help but people came through for me like sending me to college.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice is if you're teaching, listen to your students. Teach the way they learn. If they learn auditorily make sure they hear every word, if visual use pictures, work around their interests and passions like one student who predicts weather better than the weatherman.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best thing is to listen to everybody's advice and then think about it, and if it's not what she wants to do then she should do it her way. We all have our wings, we need to fly our path. Take what fits and what doesn't go for it.
