Her Story
About Camila
Camila Rivadeneira is a dedicated attorney whose career has been driven by a passion for advocating for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Inspired at a young age by her interest in legal advocacy and participation in mock trial programs during high school, she pursued a legal education with a clear vision of serving vulnerable populations. She earned her Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 2022, where she distinguished herself through academic excellence, leadership roles, and advocacy competitions, including receiving the Best Oral Advocate Award. Her involvement in organizations such as the Women’s Law Association, the Latin American Law Student Association, and the National Trial Team helped shape her skills as a persuasive advocate and community leader.
Currently serving as a Domestic Violence Staff Attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina, Camila focuses on civil domestic violence protective orders and restraining order cases throughout North Carolina. Her work involves interviewing clients, preparing evidence, advocating in court hearings, and helping survivors secure legal protections in time-sensitive situations. When protective orders are not the most appropriate resolution, she works collaboratively to develop alternative solutions, including custody agreements that incorporate domestic violence safeguards. Her legal experience also includes internships and clerkships with family law, sexual violence advocacy, and litigation organizations in both the United States and Ireland, providing her with a broad understanding of victim-centered legal services.
Beyond her professional practice, Camila is deeply committed to community service and mentorship. She has volunteered for many years with youth-focused organizations, including the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation, where she has helped guide and support children through educational and recreational activities. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she is able to connect with a diverse range of clients and communities. As a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Greensboro Bar Association, Camila continues to advance her mission of ensuring access to justice, protecting survivors, and strengthening families through compassionate and effective legal advocacy.

Ten minutes with Camila
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my ability to help clients achieve meaningful and positive outcomes during some of the most challenging times in their lives. In my work with civil restraining orders, success is not only about obtaining the order itself but also about finding the best resolution for each situation. Whether that means securing legal protection or pursuing an alternative solution that meets my client’s needs, my greatest measure of success is knowing that my clients feel supported, protected, and satisfied with the outcome.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is that, as an attorney, my role is to help people to the fullest extent possible while always remaining guided by the law. I’ve learned that effective advocacy is not just about pursuing a single outcome—it’s about resolving the situation in the way that best serves the client’s needs. Sometimes that means achieving the original objective, and other times it means identifying a practical alternative solution that provides the desired result. Focusing on resolution, while maintaining legal and ethical standards, has been one of the most valuable lessons in my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the legal profession is to prioritize your mental health from the very beginning of your career. Regardless of your area of practice—whether it’s criminal law, intellectual property, estate planning, domestic violence, or any other field—the work can be demanding and emotionally challenging. Taking care of your well-being is essential because you cannot effectively advocate for and support your clients if you are not operating at your best. Make time for self-care, establish healthy boundaries, and seek support when needed. A successful legal career is not just about professional achievement; it’s also about maintaining the resilience and balance necessary to serve others effectively over the long term.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field involves the limitations of how domestic violence statutes are interpreted in civil restraining order cases. In North Carolina, judges often focus on recent incidents involving physical violence, direct threats of harm, stalking, or harassment as defined under criminal law. As a result, individuals experiencing emotional or verbal abuse may not meet the legal requirements for a restraining order, even when there is a documented history of domestic violence. This can be especially difficult when prior physical incidents occurred outside the timeframe judges typically consider relevant. Explaining these legal limitations to clients is one of the most challenging aspects of my work, particularly when they were unaware of their legal options or were not emotionally prepared to seek help earlier. These situations highlight an ongoing opportunity for greater awareness, education, and continued discussion about how the law addresses the full spectrum of domestic abuse.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty and transparency. As an attorney, I believe it is my responsibility to provide clients with a realistic understanding of their situation and to manage expectations from the very beginning. While that may sometimes mean delivering difficult news or explaining why a desired outcome may not be possible, I would rather be direct and truthful than create false hope. I want my clients to fully understand their options, the legal realities they face, and the decisions they are making. Building trust through honest communication is essential, and I believe that transparency allows clients to make informed choices with confidence.
