Her Story

About Camile

I've been practicing law for 13 years since graduating law school, focusing on family law and criminal law. My typical day involves getting in the office, making sure the calendar is updated with court appearances or mediations, and really balancing time to be as productive as possible while also focusing on bringing in new business and keeping clients happy. About a year ago, I opened my own practice, which I consider my most notable professional achievement. I'm also of counsel with a couple other firms, so I consider it not only a firm but also an umbrella and a referral source through which I can provide services through multiple platforms. It's going well so far. I'm an active member of the Sarasota County Bar Association, Florida Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Bar, and the Family Law section of the Florida Bar. What's most important to me in my work is doing the right thing, regardless of what the value is or what the client's willing to pay. I don't think it would be worth losing my reputation - it's something that you work hard for and you can lose it really easily. I think if you're doing the right thing, not everybody's ever going to be pleased with your work or performance, but from that foundation, I can close out a case knowing that I'm doing the right thing.

Ten minutes with Camile

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my ambitions and my diligence, my hard work and dedication to whatever I'm doing. Doing the right thing is important to me in my work, regardless of what the value is or what the client's willing to pay. I don't think it would be worth losing my reputation - it's something that you work hard for and you can lose it really easily. I think if you're doing the right thing, not everybody's ever going to be pleased with your work or performance, but from that foundation, it helps me. I can close out a case knowing that I'm doing the right thing. So that's something that's key to me.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Do something you love, and you never work a day in your life.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

As a primarily male-dominated profession, don't be intimidated by that. I think that the landscape is certainly shifting. There are more female judges now than there have ever been, and so I think the sky is the limit. It's a profession through which you can practice law or do something else. It's certainly a great career if you're in it for the right reasons, and I would also say, don't box yourself into one practice area or one company. Seek out those opportunities, because there are going to be opportunities to be uncomfortable, which are opportunities to grow. So I am a big advocate for saying no, walking away, of course without burning bridges, and just kind of pushing forward until you find the right fit. And regardless of what that means, as long as you are open to learning and growing in the process, it will be just part of the experience, because that's all this is.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Doing the right thing is most important to me in my work, regardless of what the value is or what the client's willing to pay. I don't think it would be worth losing my reputation - it's something that you work hard for and you can lose it really easily. You know, it takes one bad actor, one bad person to affect your reputation. I think if you're doing the right thing, not everybody's ever going to be pleased with your work or performance, but I think from that foundation, it helps to make my conscience clear. I can close out a case knowing that I'm doing the right thing. So that's something that's key to me. In terms of work-life balance, it's cliche, but that's something I try to focus on, because our profession is very stressful - we're constantly trying to fix people's problems depending on the subject matter. So working on balance and self-care, just being intentional about spending my free time when I do have it, is all really important.
