Her Story

About Candace

Candace Silvers has worked in the legal field since 1999. She began her career in billing and accounts receivable and progressed through nearly every position in the accounting department, excluding general ledger. Currently, she serves as Billing Manager at the third largest law firm in the United States, managing a team of 10 billers while contributing to the broader accounting and billing operations as part of the management team. Silvers is efficiency-minded and has implemented process improvements such as transitioning her former firm to an end-to-end first-in-first-out billing model, which was later adopted after a merger that grew the firm from 250 to 600 attorneys. She trained over a thousand staff members on billing software during that transition. She earned an associate's degree from Malind Community College after returning to school full-time as a single mother. Outside of her professional role, Silvers served as a councilwoman for almost seven years. She attributes her success to never stopping learning and an emphasis on efficiency, drawing inspiration from advice given by her first boss and her mother. Silvers values treating team members as adults without micromanaging, an approach that former employees have described as creating the best work environment they have experienced.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Candace

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never stopping learning and being an efficiency freak. My first boss said to find the laziest person, give them the hardest job, and they'll find the easiest way to do it. My mom said find the busiest person and ask them to do the job because it will get done. I've lived by those mantras.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Never stop trying to improve either a process, yourself, your team. Never stop learning. Everything you learn makes you a better person and better in your position.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to challenge the men. Most of the time figure out the easier way to do things. Never be afraid to show what you know, never hide your intelligence, and never back down from anybody that tries to make you feel smaller than you are.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is getting higher-ups to want to change and bring in efficiencies. Law firms get technology but don't use it to full potential, doing things the hard way when easier ways exist.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Treating people like people and not micromanaging. I treat everybody like an adult. Several former employees have told me that when they worked for me, that was the best work environment they'd ever worked in.
