About Candace
Candace Vaughan is an IT and healthcare technology professional based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, currently serving at the New Bedford Community Health Center. In her dual role as an Epic Clinical Content Builder and Network Systems Administrator, she supports both clinical and technical operations within the organization. Her daily responsibilities include monitoring system tickets, ensuring backup and disaster recovery readiness, managing cybersecurity tools such as endpoint protection and Windows Defender, performing vulnerability assessments and patch management, and maintaining compliance with HIPAA standards. She also contributes to electronic health record (EHR) systems, clinical content development, and dental software support, while assisting with help desk operations across a network of hundreds of devices.
Her educational journey reflects resilience and a strong commitment to professional growth. After stepping away from formal education for many years, she returned to school in 2019 and pursued an Associate of Science in Computer and Information Sciences with a concentration in Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics at Bristol Community College, graduating magna cum laude. Earlier in her academic path, she studied Psychology at Bridgewater State University. Her return to education marked a pivotal career shift, moving from over a decade working in her family’s restaurant business into the field of information technology during the COVID era, where she quickly gained hands-on experience and advanced into increasingly technical roles.
Candace’s professional focus spans cybersecurity, network administration, digital forensics, electronic health record systems, cloud infrastructure, and disaster recovery planning. She holds certifications including Qualys and MSAB XRY Intermediate, and is known for her adaptability across both technical and clinical environments. She has played a key role in system modernization efforts, including cloud migration and infrastructure redesign for hundreds of devices within a small IT team. Looking ahead, she continues to expand her expertise through certifications and aims to grow into governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) work, combining technical security knowledge with organizational risk strategy.

Ten minutes with Candace
01What do you attribute your success to?
I believe my success has been driven by a clear sense of purpose, determination, and a commitment to continuous growth. When I joined my organization, I started in patient registration, but from the very beginning I expressed my goal of building a career in Information Technology. I remained focused on that objective, actively seeking opportunities to learn, contribute, and expand my skill set. Each new opportunity allowed me to demonstrate my capabilities, gain valuable experience, and advance professionally. Throughout my career, I have maintained a goal-oriented mindset and embraced challenges as opportunities for growth, which ultimately enabled me to progress into the IT field and continue advancing within the organization.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One piece of advice I would give is to not let imposter syndrome hold you back. Early in my career, I struggled with it quite a bit and often underestimated my own abilities. Over time, I’ve learned that no one has all the answers, and that’s okay.
What matters is having the confidence to learn, ask questions, and find solutions. If you don’t know something, you can research it, seek guidance, and come back with an informed answer. The ability to learn and adapt is often more valuable than already knowing everything.
This mindset has been invaluable throughout my career. It has helped me build confidence, trust in my abilities, and continue growing both personally and professionally. Don’t underestimate what you’re capable of achieving simply because you’re still learning—everyone is.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the IT industry is to approach it with confidence and an open mind. While technology has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated field, that should never discourage anyone from pursuing a career they are passionate about.
In my own experience, I have found the industry to be welcoming and supportive. Although I am currently the only woman on my team, I have been fortunate to work alongside colleagues who value collaboration, respect, and professional growth.
My biggest recommendation is to believe in your abilities, continue learning, and never let self-doubt hold you back. Be willing to ask questions, take on new challenges, and advocate for yourself. Your knowledge, skills, and perspective are valuable, and there is absolutely a place for you in this field.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is keeping pace with the rapid evolution of technology. The landscape is constantly changing, and staying current requires a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, especially outside of a formal academic environment.
To address this, I am actively pursuing industry certifications to expand my knowledge and strengthen my expertise. Earning these certifications will not only enhance my technical skills but also create opportunities to broaden my career path, potentially into consulting roles.
Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to become a Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) Auditor. I am particularly drawn to the role because it combines technology, security, risk management, and strategic decision-making. I see it as an exciting opportunity for continued professional growth and a meaningful way to help organizations strengthen their security and compliance programs.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In both my professional and personal life, integrity, collaboration, and balance are values that I hold in high regard. In the workplace, I believe in being a strong team player, fostering open communication, and taking the time to listen and understand before responding. I strive to approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset, focusing on creative problem-solving and thoughtful decision-making.
Outside of work, my priorities center around family, personal well-being, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I believe it is important to be fully present in both professional and personal responsibilities, which requires setting boundaries and making time to recharge. While I remain committed to my role and responsive to critical matters when needed, I also value the importance of disconnecting, spending quality time with family and friends, and pursuing activities that support my overall well-being, such as fitness and reading.
Ultimately, I believe that success is built on strong relationships, continuous growth, and maintaining balance between professional achievement and personal fulfillment.
