Her Story

About Candes

I've been in my field for 15 years, and I'm a consultant and small business owner. Most of my work has really been partnering with organizations to implement solutions so that they can get results. I do that in my private business, but I also identify as a philanthropist, and in both areas, I really do build systems and act as an advisor to really help folks think through the work and how they can service, whether it's their end users or the communities that they serve. I come from healthcare tech - that's where you see the Quartet Health, as well as the Express Scripts. Right now, in my consulting business, I do project management work, and again, that's really building systems. I do strategy work, and I also advise departments of state government. My main area of expertise would be building systems, honestly. I started my business in 2019, but I did part-time consulting because I was still working in the private sector. When I got laid off for the first time in my entire career during the tech layoffs four years ago, I was able to really ramp it up, and I have successfully built a six-figure business to maintain my lifestyle, as well as to support others who are trying to get into consulting work. My business focuses on a lot of impact for end users and community members.

Ten minutes with Candes

01What do you attribute your success to?

I really think being kind and being able to share what you've learned in ways with folks, that's very helpful, and so that's kind of how I've navigated the consulting space. I have other skills, business development, sales, all of that good stuff, too, but people have really put me in the right places because of the relationships that I've built with them. When someone asked me how do you build relationships, like, all these people really do support you, I really had to take a step back, and I'm still trying to figure that out today. I just really think being kind and being able to share what you've learned with folks is very helpful. I make sure I build transformational relationships with folks, and I seek mentorship, and then also be a mentor as well. That's how I've made it so far. Those mentors, and just for me being able to build relationships - when I first went into full-time consulting, again, it wasn't because I wanted to, but it was because I had got laid off, but people have really put me in the right places because of the relationships that I've built with them.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

In the world of consulting, just make sure you build transformational relationships with folks. Make sure you seek mentorship, and then also be a mentor as well. That's how I've made it so far. When I first went into full-time consulting, again, it wasn't because I wanted to, but it was because I had got laid off, but those mentors, and just for me being able to build relationships - people have really put me in the right places because of the relationships that I've built with them. I really think being kind and being able to share what you've learned in ways with folks, that's very helpful. I have other skills, business development, sales, all of that good stuff, too, but people have really put me in the right places because of the relationships that I've built with them. I believe that it can be done, but you really have to go on your unique route. I'm not a person that believes, like, if I did it, you could do it, but that it can be done, but you really have to go on your route.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I really do thrive in really supporting other people. I'm a person who thrives in giving back. I've just experienced giving my entire life, and so I really do think my philanthropic side comes from my great-grandparents being a village, and that's why I support folks how I do as well. What I noticed upon my great-grandparents' death is how my grandparents helped the entire neighborhood. They would make so much food, and people would come, and they would get what they need. For me, it's really about opening doors for folks. Most of my work or my finances support others. I'm very modest in how I live, but how I support folks is through my work. When I got laid off, one of the things I was angry at, I said, how could this happen to me? Most of my work or my finances support others. It's really about opening doors for people to see that it can be done. I really can't think of anything more notable than my philanthropic work and the mentorship that I provide in workspaces. I do pour into people with mentorship and helping those who are in executive positions or looking to be in executive positions to transition into them.
