Her Story
About Candice
I came into this industry somewhat serendipitously. My mom started Premier Recovery Solutions as a nurse, and after I had kids and was out of the work field, she brought me on. I started working for her just a couple hours a week about six years ago, and we've turned it into what it is now. I have a business degree with a concentration in marketing, and I've been able to use all of my planning that I learned in college. When I joined, she just had herself and one other case manager. Over the past four years of working more than just a couple hours a week, we've doubled our client load year over year. I've brought legitimacy to the business by creating our logo, website, folders, and all the professional materials that took us to the next level. By doing that, we've been able to get in with some of the big firms, and we do everything we can to wow their socks off. We pursue excellence in everything we do - from client care to communication with our attorneys to our documentation. There are a lot of case management companies out there, but we sell ourselves on pursuing excellence in every avenue.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from a gym teacher who told me to do the right thing, because you know what the right thing to do is. I really carry that with me - do the next right thing. I have ADHD, and everyone that I know has ADHD, and it's really easy to get off track. So just do the right next thing. What's the next step? Focus on that. It keeps me grounded and moving forward.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think it's an awesome industry. You have to be open and flexible and kind of tenacious. It's very different from the hospital setting, so girls either love the job or it's not for them. It requires a lot of flexibility - you have to be a self-starter. But if you can handle it, I think it's just the best job ever. You work from home a lot, and then you go and meet your clients. You get to dress up, and there's no hands-on nursing, so you still get that client interaction without all the bedside stuff. You've got to be tenacious when dealing with the adjusters. There's a lot of coordination of care between the attorneys and the insurance company and the doctors and the clients and their family. I have a couple friends who work for me because I tell anyone who's a nurse that they should come work for us - you don't get so tired like you do in the hospital. Also, say things with a smile. You do a lot of talking to people on the phone, so if you can just smile through the things and let people hear the smile in your voice, you get more - you catch more flies with honey - and have more success that way. Have a positive attitude and don't give up.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
We try to pursue excellence in everything that we do. There are a lot of case management companies out there, and I've seen some of their other reporting and things. We sell ourselves on just pursuing excellence in every avenue - client care, communication with our attorneys, our documentation, being ready for court if that were to happen. It's the same thing I try to do with my children.
