Her Story

About Candice

I graduated from law school in 2014, so I've been in law for over 11 years now. I’m currently Senior Counsel at Mastercard. Throughout my career, I've held legal roles at Equifax, the credit reporting agency, at FIS Global, which is a large financial technology company that supports over 90% of the world's banks, and at Beazley Insurance Group, which is an international specialty insurance company, where I managed national litigation across the U.S. Prior to that, I worked at a few Chicago law firms doing commercial defense work and defending hospitals and doctors in high-stakes litigation. When I was litigating at the law firms, that was very enjoyable, but then I became a mom and wanted to shift into a different lifestyle. My husband, Matthew, and I now have two children and live in Atlanta.

What brought me to where I am now, and what continues to drive my motivation, is just being closer to the business, giving strong legal advice, enabling the business to make risk-informed decisions and safe decisions, and to continue to grow. Being a business partner has really been rewarding to me, to help each business succeed. I'm also a lifelong learner, and that's why I enjoy the law, because there's so much happening all the time, even now with AI, and trying to figure out how that impacts employees, how it impacts our daily lives, what safety features need to be put in place. There are so many things that are being decided right now, and it's really cool to be a part of that.

Ten minutes with Candice

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to growing up in a household where my mother’s a doctor and my father owned a business. Just seeing the dedication that they had for their careers, but also for their family, was really a great example, and that's been what I've known.

My drive to have a successful career stems from the desire to do my best. I just show up, and I don't give up. If things get challenging, I'm always consistent. I grew up in a home where there was never a limit placed on what you could do, and that's what I want to represent to my daughter. She's six and a half, and my son is three.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My first piece of advice would just be open, because what you think you're interested in might change over time. What you want from your life might change over time, but the beauty of a JD, the beauty of getting that law degree, is that it opens you up to so many possibilities, not even just being a lawyer. I know women who obtain their JD who might practice for a couple years, they figure out, hey, this isn't for me, but because they've gotten that JD, they're just so much more attractive to so many other fields, like real estate, policy, government, you name it. That JD is going to command them higher pay and better, more respect, even if they don't even use it.

For those that decide to stick with law, it's just such a massive field. It touches everything. You could go do healthcare, you could do government, you could do payments. I'm an example. I started doing healthcare, now I'm in the financial space. You can pivot. If you get bored, or something doesn't resonate with you, you don't have to be committed. I think for women, especially women that want to have families, it's important to have flexibility. Being a lawyer does give you that. There are so many opportunities. You could even do contract work. I know lawyers who are older than me, who left the field to go start a family, and then they come back, and now they're at the top of their game, and there are not that many fields that you can do that.
