Her Story

About Candice

Candice Sutton, ASCP, is a Histotechnologist I at IDEXX BioAnalytics, where she supports preclinical research and histopathology operations within a regulated life sciences environment. Her professional expertise encompasses histotechnology, histopathology, laboratory workflow and operations, project coordination, project management, quality requirements, scientific documentation, and cross-functional collaboration. In her current role, she supports preclinical research studies while maintaining specimen integrity and established documentation requirements, tracking project timelines and turnaround times, coordinating corrective actions, and collaborating with laboratory teams and leadership to address operational and quality priorities.

Previously, Candice served as a Histopathology Coordinator at IDEXX BioAnalytics, where she coordinated complex histopathology casework and scientific workflows for research and diagnostic clients. She managed project timelines, priorities, workload, and turnaround-time requirements; facilitated recurring workflow meetings; collaborated with pathologists, scientific teams, laboratory leadership, IT, vendors, and external stakeholders; and supported digital pathology technologies, whole-slide scanning, and virtual microscopy systems. Her earlier experience includes histology and cytology operations at Boone Health, histopathology work at Central Pathology Laboratories and Quest Diagnostics, and ownership of a state-licensed home childcare program, where she developed experience in operations, regulatory compliance, documentation, financial administration, scheduling, and communication. She holds an Associate of Arts in Biology from Columbia College and earned her Histotechnician (ASCP) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology in June 2022.

Candice attributes her success to the motivation provided by her family, her desire to create a better life for her children, and her own aspirations for continued personal and professional growth. She approaches her career with persistence and believes in staying focused on her goals despite discouragement or obstacles. Her values include hard work, open-mindedness, kindness, and empathy, and she encourages others—particularly young women—to maintain their passion, continue pursuing their goals, and never allow challenges to extinguish their determination. Looking toward her continued professional development, her experience in scientific operations, histopathology, project coordination, and process improvement provides a strong foundation for further growth in project management and life sciences operations.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Candice

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family, who have been a tremendous source of motivation for me. Wanting to provide a better life for my children and achieve greater financial stability has always encouraged me to keep moving forward. At the same time, I am motivated by my own goals and aspirations and by the vision I have for what I want my life and career to look like. I remind myself that I have not reached my final destination yet and that there is always another goal to pursue and another opportunity to grow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to put my best foot forward and not allow other people to stand in my way or discourage me. I believe it is important to remain focused on my goals, stay committed to my path, and not allow outside influences to distract me or cause me to lose sight of what I am working to achieve.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is simple: keep going. Do not allow your passion or determination to burn out. If this is something you truly want, pursue it and fight for the opportunities you want. Continue developing yourself, remain committed to your goals, and do not give up when the path becomes difficult. The possibilities are limitless when you are willing to pursue what you want and continue moving forward.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the challenges in my field is advancing when you do not yet have a particular skill set, or when you possess transferable skills but are competing against others who already have the specific experience or expertise required for an opportunity. Developing and obtaining those additional skills can be challenging, particularly when competing for advancement. However, I believe these challenges are manageable. With determination, continued learning, and a willingness to develop new skills, it is possible to overcome those barriers and continue progressing professionally.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are hard work, open-mindedness, kindness, and empathy. I believe in putting genuine effort into what I do while remaining open to different perspectives and experiences. I also believe it is important to recognize and respect the differences among people. Kindness and empathy are especially important to me because they help create an environment where people feel understood, respected, and valued.
