Her Story
About Carina
Carina Simms serves as a field officer for Maricopa County in the animal welfare field, a role she has held for nearly two years. She has worked with animals throughout her adult life, including at a pet cremation facility where she picked up animals from shelters, and she previously trained dogs after attending a canine behavioral academy. This background enables her to recognize that aggressive behavior in dogs often stems from fear, allowing her to approach situations with empathy and strong moral ethics. Simms attributes her success to being hardworking and willing to grow. Her accomplishments include a nomination for Rookie of the Year in the animal field and being featured on Maricopa County's Facebook page during ACO Appreciation Week, where the social media team followed her on the job. In her personal time, she has published a book and is working on a children's book, and she has competed in dodgeball at a national level as part of a practice squad for Team USA.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think just who I am as a person. Definitely willing to grow, hardworking, strong moral ethics. I used to train dogs and went to a canine behavioral academy so I can recognize and read dogs, recognizing that a lot of times they're aggressive because they're scared, being empathetic towards them.
