Her Story

About Carla

Carla Montalvo currently works in automotive sales, a role she began in April after two years selling insurance and prior experience in customer service roles including serving and jewelry stores. She studied biology with an initial intent to pursue medicine but found sales more engaging due to the process of building relationships and helping clients find the right products. Carla attributes her success to her humble background in Puerto Rico, where she lived for 24 years before moving to the Fort Walton area, and the lessons from college about the necessity of hard work. She takes pride in her Salesperson of the Month award and values empathy, which she learned from her mother and her cultural background as a Latina, while maintaining a strong personality. In her daily work, she focuses on prospecting, follow-ups, and learning product details, with goals to improve at community events and personal branding. Carla advises young women entering sales to build self-confidence, learn the industry thoroughly, seek help, and sometimes set emotions aside, especially in male-dominated environments. Her main language is Spanish, and she is fluent in English as well.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Carla

01What do you attribute your success to?

I come from a very humble background, and I've always been grinding my way through all of my achievements. College really taught me that unless you work hard, you don't get certain things.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Working with men it's not easy. Just starting off, try to build as much confidence in yourself as you can, try to learn as much from the industry as you can by yourself and get help from other people too. Sometimes you have to take the emotion out of things.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would really love to get better at prospecting, going to more community events, attending more activities, getting in the right places to meet the people. Building a brand and putting a name for yourself out there.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being empathetic with people and understanding what they need and where they stand. I have a strong personality from my background as a Latina from Puerto Rico. My mother taught me a lot about empathy.
