Her Story

About Carlie

Carlie Fleig is an educator, instructional leader, and doctoral scholar who is passionate about creating equitable, inclusive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to succeed. Currently serving as an Instructional Mentor for a Title I Tulsa Public School, she partners with administrators, teachers, and students to strengthen instructional practices, implement effective curriculum strategies, and support schoolwide success. Her collaborative leadership style, commitment to mentorship, and belief in the transformative power of education have made her a trusted resource for both educators and school leaders. Carlie's career reflects a purposeful transition from retail merchandising to education, driven by her desire to make a lasting impact on the lives of students. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in Retail Merchandising Leadership from Oklahoma State University, she entered the classroom as a first-grade teacher with no prior teaching experience. Her dedication and effectiveness quickly earned her the prestigious Masonic Award for Teacher of Today during her first year of teaching. She later taught third grade before advancing into instructional leadership, where she now coaches teachers and helps create systems that promote student achievement. Alongside her professional work, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with a certification in Hidden Student Populations, focusing her research on equitable access, trauma-informed systems, and data-informed educational leadership. With expertise spanning instructional coaching, curriculum implementation, sustainability, leadership, and educational policy, Carlie is committed to bridging research and practice to improve outcomes for underserved student populations. Her long-term goal is to teach at the collegiate level, preparing future educators and leaders to think critically, lead ethically, and drive meaningful systems-level change. Through every stage of her career, she has remained dedicated to empowering others, fostering innovation, and creating educational environments where both students and educators can thrive.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Carlie

01What do you attribute your success to?

My grit and my willingness to not let somebody tell me no. I lost my mom young, lived with grandparents, and used a counselor's doubt as drive to succeed at OSU and beyond.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't apologize for who you are. I grew up trying to fit into a mold but realized I wasn't living up to my potential.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay resilient. Don't let other factors impact you. If you have the drive and the want for it, go after it. Know that you are showing up for somebody every day and your work is life-changing for others.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being honest and staying true to who you are. I realized I wasn't living up to my potential by trying to fit someone else's mold.
