Carmelita Castillo is a dedicated leader with more than 20 years of professional experience spanning operations, telecommunications, training, customer advocacy, and employee development. She began taking on management responsibilities at just 18 and has continued to grow as a leader through roles in operations, retail, sales, and telecommunications. At T-Mobile, she served as an Assistant Trainer and Coach, where she focused on developing both new and experienced employees, strengthening customer experiences, and helping teams improve performance. Her leadership approach is rooted in problem-solving, critical thinking, innovation, and individualization—understanding that each person brings unique strengths and needs to the workplace. Throughout her career, she has coached and developed hundreds of people, finding particular fulfillment in helping others recognize their potential and succeed.
Education has been an important part of Carmelita’s personal and professional journey. Originally pursuing nursing, she discovered an aptitude and passion for business after excelling in her first semester of pre-business coursework. She earned an associate degree in pre-business before completing business studies at New Mexico State University, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Colorado Technical University, where she graduated with a 4.0 GPA. As a first-generation college graduate, Carmelita takes particular pride in surpassing the educational milestones established by previous generations of her family. She is continuing that journey today as she pursues a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management, reflecting her belief that learning is a lifelong process and an essential part of effective leadership.
For Carmelita, however, success is measured not simply by professional accomplishments, but by the impact she has on the people and communities around her. With more than 25 years of volunteer service, she has given her time to organizations supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and other community needs, as well as local libraries and her nieces’ and nephews’ sports teams. She believes leadership is ultimately about connection—seeing people, listening to them, and helping them believe in themselves. Her advice to young women entering management is to pursue their goals courageously, recognize that failure can be a valuable teacher, and never underestimate the power of making someone feel valued. Whether through her career, education, mentorship, or volunteer work, Carmelita strives to leave a lasting positive impact on the lives of others.

Ten minutes with Carmelita
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, connection, and my genuine desire to help others recognize their own potential. I stepped into management at 18, and throughout my career in telecommunications and operations management, I have learned that leadership is about much more than titles or degrees. As the first person in my family to graduate from college, earning degrees in business administration and operations management while continuing my education through a master’s program, I have always been willing to challenge myself and pursue my goals. What motivates me most is making a meaningful impact on people’s lives—seeing them, hearing them, believing in them, and encouraging them until they believe in themselves. Whether through my career, volunteering in my community, or being a new mother, I strive to lead with resilience, compassion, and purpose and to leave a positive impression on everyone I encounter.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always make the attempt. The worst thing that you'll do is fail and learn from it. Mistakes are bound to happen, but if you can figure out your lesson in those mistakes, you'll become a much better manager or person than the person who failed to try.
