Her Story
About Carmen
I'm an IT engineer who graduated in Venezuela back in 1992, and I also earned a master's in economics there. After living in Venezuela, I moved to Canada where I spent almost 10 years before making my second immigration to the United States. Here, I pursued a master's in supply chain at UT Dallas, graduating in 2019, and became a professional in supply chain. I've also taken my certification in supply chain and completed studies in Six Sigma Green Belt, which focuses on process improvement. Currently, I work as a strategic sourcing manager at Occidental, where I do sourcing and manage big negotiations and big contracts. As an individual contributor, I negotiate contracts every day, every night, every moment. One of my main challenges is putting everyone together in the same room and keeping the communication flowing between the suppliers and the company. I always try to manage all my negotiations with transparency, and I'm constantly working to get the best from every deal.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There is a lot of negotiations internally and externally, and I think that's the main thing. Putting everyone together in the same room is one of the challenges, and keeping the communication between the suppliers and the company. Of course, negotiating and trying to get the best from one deal is always part of what I do. I always try to manage all my negotiations with transparency, and I would say that is one of my challenges. I work with a lot of vendors and a lot of heavy negotiations, and sometimes I have to keep myself private.
