Her Interview
Ten minutes with Carmen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I want to say it has a lot to do with the way that I was raised. It also has a lot to do with the way that I see life, and it's that whenever I see something that is challenging, I always think how to go through, and how to fix it. I see life as a puzzle. Sometimes, some pieces are missing. But it's up to you to find those pieces and make it work. So it's kind of like, there's no chance for failure, even though failure is bound to happen. But don't see failure as the end of the journey, see it as maybe a misstep, and figure it out.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stop yourself and listen to the people that know. So you can understand what they're trying to explain. ... have the patience to learn what you have to do. And if someone is grateful enough to share that knowledge with you, take it. And always... my mom always said to me, you have two ears and one mouth, so listen first and talk after.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Make sure that you study everything that you're working with so you know what you're talking about. Be always the person in the room that will have the strength to ask someone to stop and listen to you when necessary. Don't allow anyone to make you feel less because you're a woman. But always let your knowledge be the one to speak for yourself. ... keep your core beliefs, your core personality there.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is the most important value for me. Don't do anything that you would regret. Always think about your core values, what you were taught as a child. Be truthful. ... Always treat people the same way you want to be treated. ... always recognize and cherish your value. ... always be open to feedback, because not all criticism is bad.
