Her Story
About Carmina
Carmina Gomez is an experienced nursing professional and care coordinator with Oregon Hospice, bringing 32 years of experience to the field. Beginning her career as a licensed vocational nurse, she built a strong foundation in home health before transitioning into hospice care coordination. In her current role, she serves as a vital connection among patients’ families, physicians, and nursing teams, helping coordinate quality care and ensuring that patients and their loved ones receive the support they need. Her commitment to compassionate service extends to her availability around the clock, including remote and on-call responsibilities.
Throughout her career, Carmina has continued to strengthen her knowledge and expertise through hands-on community-based training, continuing education, and professional conferences. Her approach to nursing is grounded in compassion, service, and a genuine commitment to helping others physically, emotionally, and mentally. She attributes her professional success to her faith and reliance on divine guidance, which have given her the confidence and clarity to make meaningful career decisions and pursue the path that aligns with her purpose.
Carmina also recognizes the evolving opportunities within nursing, particularly the growth of remote care coordination, which allows experienced nurses to support patients and healthcare teams from home and across state lines. While this model presents the challenge of translating the traditional hands-on nursing approach into a virtual setting, she embraces the opportunity to apply her experience in new ways. Above all, Carmina values honesty, transparency, and work-life balance. She believes that making time for family and maintaining perspective outside of work allows her to return to her professional responsibilities refreshed, focused, and energized.

Ten minutes with Carmina
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith in God and my reliance on divine guidance. Trusting in His direction has given me the confidence to make important career decisions with clarity and without guilt, allowing me to embrace new opportunities and ultimately discover and pursue the path that is truly meant for me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to recognize and value my worth, including my time, energy, experience, and education. I’ve learned to advocate for myself, set healthy boundaries, and feel confident saying yes or no when a situation does not align with my goals or values. I also believe that staying in a position should never be driven solely by the fear of having to remain employed; career decisions should consider the bigger picture, including how a role supports your overall well-being, personal priorities, and family life.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give to young women entering nursing is to genuinely have a passion for helping others and being there for people when they need support most. Nursing is about much more than administering medications or giving injections; it requires caring for the whole person physically, emotionally, and mentally. At times, nurses may even provide guidance and support that extends beyond traditional clinical care. If you truly value serving others, advocating for their needs, and making a meaningful difference in their lives, nursing can be an incredibly rewarding career.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in nursing today is the ability to work remotely, which has opened doors that were not available to nurses in the past. Nurses can now provide support and care from home, sometimes serving patients and organizations across different states. At the same time, this model presents the challenge of adapting the traditional nursing mindset of doing whatever it takes to help patients to a virtual environment. Providing compassionate, responsive, and effective care over the phone requires nurses to apply their clinical experience in new ways while maintaining the same level of dedication and personal connection.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, transparency, and balance. I believe that being open and genuine with others builds trust and allows people to see that you truly care. Just as importantly, I value making time for family and maintaining a healthy balance between my career and personal life. Prioritizing family and taking time to recharge not only strengthens the relationships that matter most, but also allows me to return to work feeling refreshed, focused, and energized.
