Carol Lavin Bernick is a distinguished business leader, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and author whose career has been defined by business transformation, thoughtful leadership, and a commitment to creating meaningful impact. She built her leadership experience through a longstanding career with Alberto-Culver, where she took on increasing responsibility and ultimately served as Executive Chairman. She also led the company’s consumer products business during a significant period of growth and change, helping guide the organization through complex business challenges before overseeing its sale to Unilever. Today, as CEO of Polished Nickel Capital Management, Carol continues to draw on her decades of experience in business, entrepreneurship, investment, and organizational leadership to support long-term growth and sustainable value.

Carol has carried the lessons of her corporate career into her extensive philanthropic and community work. She has focused on using business principles, strategic thinking, and available resources to create opportunities for individuals and communities, including through her involvement with Enchanted Backpack. She is also the author of Innovative Philanthropy at Work, where she examines how business leaders can approach philanthropy with greater purpose and apply their professional expertise to social impact. 01What do you attribute your success to?

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to stay curious, listen to others, remain open to change, and never be afraid to step outside my comfort zone. Careers rarely follow a perfectly straight path, and some of the most valuable opportunities come from experiences that challenge us to learn and grow. I’ve learned to embrace new perspectives, adapt when circumstances change, and remain willing to rethink my approach when necessary.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering business and leadership is to stay curious, believe in your abilities, and be willing to take on challenges that stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Build strong relationships, listen to people with different perspectives, and remain open to learning throughout your career. Be patient with your journey, embrace change, and do not be afraid to pursue opportunities that may not fit a traditional path. Most importantly, use your experience and success to create opportunities for others and make a meaningful impact.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in business and leadership today is the ability to adapt to rapid changes in technology, consumer expectations, and the way people work. At the same time, leaders must ensure that innovation does not come at the expense of strong relationships, company culture, and the human side of business. I believe the challenge is to embrace new

The values most important to me are integrity, curiosity, trust, adaptability, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference. I believe in treating people with respect, listening to different perspectives, and approaching challenges with an open mind. In both my professional and personal life, I value long-term thinking, continuous learning, and using the opportunities and experience I have gained to help create opportunities for others.
