Her Interview
Ten minutes with Carol
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering encouragement and wisdom of my father. Growing up, he instilled in me the belief that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to, provided I had a plan and worked diligently toward my goals. His guidance has been a constant source of motivation through every degree, certification, and job interview, fueling my drive to achieve not only for myself but also in honor of his legacy. Despite having only a high school education, my father emphasized the value of learning, which inspired me to pursue higher education and professional growth for both of us.
My desire to serve people is what inspired me to enter my field. Working in state government offers the unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Texans, something I cherish as a proud native of the state. The ability to contribute to my community and give back to Texas is deeply important to me, and I am grateful that my career allows me to uphold these values.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most transformative career advice I have received underscores the importance of recognizing and capitalizing on opportunity amid chaos and organizational transition. This mindset is a cornerstone of strategic leadership, enabling professionals to navigate ambiguity with agility and resilience. By leveraging change management principles and adopting an opportunistic lens during periods of disruption, I have consistently identified pathways for innovation and growth. Embracing volatility not only facilitates personal and professional development but also positions leaders to drive value and deliver results in today's dynamic business landscape—a philosophy I actively champion as part of my leadership approach.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
For young women entering the state government sector, I strongly encourage taking on stretch assignments, participating in diverse projects, and collaborating across division lines. These experiences not only broaden your skill set but also provide valuable insights into different facets of the organization, helping you discover where your interests and passions truly lie. By stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing opportunities to learn, you’ll build confidence, expand your professional network, and gain a clearer sense of the impact you want to make within your industry.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in the state government sector is operating with limited resources, which requires leaders and teams to be especially creative and resourceful. This constraint drives the need for innovative thinking and encourages the adoption of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to streamline processes, boost efficiency, and improve organizational effectiveness. By leveraging these advancements, agencies can maximize their impact despite budgetary and staffing limitations.
Another significant opportunity—and challenge—is preparing the workforce for the future. Equipping employees with the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving landscape, while nurturing their individual passions and fostering a sense of commitment, is essential. Investing in ongoing training, professional development, and technology integration helps build a resilient and agile workforce that can adapt to change, drive meaningful progress, and contribute to the organization’s mission.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Service to others and a commitment to giving back to my community and state are foundational values that guide both my professional and personal life. Working in state government enables me to serve the citizens of Texas—a responsibility I embrace wholeheartedly as a proud native Texan. I am deeply motivated by opportunities to contribute meaningfully to my community and to advance the well-being of my state.
Additionally, I place great importance on sharing knowledge and fostering growth in others. This dedication is reflected in my frequent speaking engagements at various state agencies and conferences, as well as in my role as a mentor. I am passionate about encouraging colleagues and peers, helping them realize their potential and achieve their goals. As a lifelong learner, I actively pursue ongoing education and certifications, driven by a desire for continuous improvement. Teaching business ethics and project management part-time at the Center of Advanced Legal Studies is another avenue through which I channel my enthusiasm for education and empowerment, finding immense fulfillment in supporting the development of future leaders.
