Her Story

About Carolina

Carolina Loweree serves as Executive Director of Happy House, a nonprofit she has led since 2007 that provides character building programs and mentoring for at-risk youth through the Los Angeles Police Department Junior Cadets initiative. She brings more than 40 years of experience in education and youth development, having taught for over 20 years at a private school before retiring around 2003-2004 following her children's graduations. Since then, she has continued working with students through after-school tutoring, mentoring gang-involved youth, and substituting at her grandson's private school. Born in East Los Angeles, Loweree overcame early discrimination and prejudice to pursue her passion for education, attributing her success to stubbornness, persistence, and personal integrity. She is a board member of the North Valley Chamber of Commerce and has been recognized as Teacher of the Year, a San Fernando Award finalist, and the 2022 Inspirational Woman by the United Chamber of Commerce.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Carolina

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from stubbornness and persistence, along with personal integrity. I refused to accept what others said about me, like being called a 'stupid Mexican' in first grade, knowing I could speak both English and Spanish. I went with my gut and found people who backed me up as loyal friends.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't give up and don't allow anybody to make you think that you can't. Especially as a woman, don't accept prejudice. Keep your personal integrity and don't do things that are not moral for yourself. You'll find the right thing.
