Her Interview
Ten minutes with Caroline
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say, A, just being hardworking, because I'm passionate about what I do. ... sometimes you need to stay late and pull some crazy hours to get things done... And then I also think just being creative and problem solving, I don't really like to take no for an answer, I think a no or a difficult budget is kind of just an opportunity to get a bit creative with it and find some different paths.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Best career advice I've ever received, I'd say, is a bit cliche, but it's something I grew up hearing from my dad since I was a little kid, which is, if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. ... your work becomes a lot easier and a lot more meaningful when you're doing what you love, I feel like that's what gives me the energy and motivation to going when there is times they have to work 12-hour days is genuinely being passionate about the work and being excited to open my laptop every day and do it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To young women, I would say really just to be confident. I think confidence goes a long ways... no matter your age or your experience level, everyone has something important to say, and everyone's voice is important, and I think everyone should speak up if they have an idea, speak up if they see something they disagree with, and just really let their voice be heard. That's the only way you're gonna learn and gain that confidence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I'd say the biggest challenge is that, you know, the film industry suffered a bit a couple years ago. We had the strikes, and we had some other setbacks, and so production stalled for a minute, meaning, you know, less work opportunities for everyone. ... And I think what was so great about that, though, is even when the jobs became competitive, the people didn't, and it was still very supportive. And I think it's we've really seen a recent uptick where a lot of things are getting produced again, so that's been really, really positive to see, as well as there's just been so many more unconventional ways recently, that people are making and releasing movies.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My work and personal life, I'd say, one would really just be kindness. I think that's something that's often forgotten and taken for granted, especially when we're working in stressful situations. ... I also think transparency and honesty, in work and in personal life, especially when you're negotiating and you're handling bigger deals and bigger budgets, I try to remember that, especially when I'm negotiating deals for either composers or for song licensing, you know, we're even if we may be on opposing sides, we're all on the same side, which is trying to get the best possible deal for the artists that are compensated and for the project.
