Her Story
About Caroline
Caroline Johnson specializes in construction accounting and multi-entity accounting. She works for a parent company overseeing 12 entities and manages a team of four, splitting her time traveling between offices in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Johnson earned her Bachelor's in Accounting from Indiana University Southeast in December 2017 after playing softball there during college. She transitioned into construction accounting about six years ago from public accounting. Johnson attributes her success to a strong work ethic and competitive nature developed through college softball, along with surrounding herself with motivating people. She values communicating often and honestly and advises young women entering the field to chase experience rather than titles and to become problem solvers. Johnson sees AI as both an opportunity and challenge in accounting, noting that while it can help, it does not replace the work of real accountants and controllers.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell them not to necessarily chase titles, but to chase experience. And to become a person who fixes problems.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest opportunities and challenges right now are AI. There's a stigma that AI can do accounting, but while it can help, it doesn't take away what a real accountant and controller can do.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
