About Carolyn

Carolyn Eide is a retired middle school principal based in Highland, California. With 32 years of experience in education, she began her professional journey as an athletic coach for volleyball at the college level before returning to California and transitioning into education, where she ultimately served as a middle school principal. Eide holds degrees from Biola University and the University of Wyoming. Throughout her career, she was selected as a Who's Who teacher for five years, received county-level recognition for extended learning opportunities, and guided her school to designation as a Schools to Watch in California as well as a national Schools to Watch. She maintains membership in the California Administrators Association. Additionally, under her leadership, her middle school amassed a number of state and local recognitions to include: AVID site of Distinction, Positive Behavior Intervention System at the Platinum State level, California Green School recognition at the Gold level all while at a Dual-Language Immersion school with a Free and Reduced population of 89% and 1600 students. Her school led the district with Inclusion efforts and was recognized at the County level as a local leading school.Eide attributes her success to perseverance and values integrity, hard work, honesty, and communication in both her professional and personal life. She advises young women entering the field to build meaningful relationships and use them for guidance. Among the challenges she identifies in education are political agendas and competing priorities that can interfere with decisions that best serve students.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance and problem solving. I started out as an athletic coach for volleyball on the college level before returning to California and getting into education, eventually becoming a middle school principal. Throughout my life I have been fortunate to have numerous mentors who encouraged me to work hard, network, use my resources and continue to learn throughout my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Always leave a place better than you found it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make meaningful relationships and use those relationships for advice and guidance. Continue to listen and learn to all people be whether that is a student, a family member, a teacher, a classified employee, community member, another administrator or district employee. Always do your best and live a life of honesty and integrity.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Political agendas and competing agendas often interfere with what's best for students, including teacher unions, political bills and agendas that impact fiscal responses to problem solving.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, hard work, honesty, and communication are most important to me.
