What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my military background. The Army gave me a solid foundation to build from. I was in the Army just 4 days after I graduated high school, so I was really just a kid, and I grew up in the military. I was in my first war zone within a year. The Army taught me so many critical skills - teamwork, leadership, communication, and dedication. All of those things have contributed in different ways to making me successful where I am today. That foundation has been invaluable throughout my entire career.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of my leaders told me that we need to move from the position of being right to being trusted. It's not always important to be right - it's more important to be trusted. That advice has really stuck with me throughout my career.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell young women to learn what you can and stay dedicated. Learning and knowledge is power, and it can take you a long way in this industry. Keep learning and stay committed to your growth.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the biggest challenge and opportunity right now is all around AI - learning what AI can do for you, how it can make you work smarter and quicker. But the real challenge is learning how to work with AI, especially in compliance. In my field, you have to figure out where that fine line is between the licensed broker requirement versus assistance from AI. U.S. regulations state that you've got to have a licensed broker do customs work, so we're navigating where AI can help while still staying compliant with U.S. customs regulations.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Trust is definitely the most important value to me. You've got to have the trust of the people that work for you, as well as with you, in order to be successful. As long as you've got that trust and comfort level there, people are more likely to come to you with ideas or concerns. In order to be successful, you've got to be approachable. So I think trust is the foundation of everything - both professionally and personally.
