About Carolyn
Carolyn Hicks serves as a Senior Advocate with Senior Care Authority, specializing in Senior Living Guidance Solutions for families in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. With three and a half years in this role, she helps seniors and their families navigate options such as independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing by educating them on programs, fees, and availability across over a thousand communities. Her extensive background in healthcare includes starting in physicians' practices, managing a small practice while earning her degree, working 13 years in marketing and public relations at Baylor University Medical Center, and later consulting for hospitals before transitioning to senior advocacy. She earned a degree in marketing, public relations, and communications from the University of Central Oklahoma. Carolyn attributes her success to her family, faith, and support system, and she advises those entering the field to tour facilities and pursue internships to understand the role before committing.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Carolyn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my family and the way I was raised in a good Christian family that was always kind and giving back. Faith, family, and a good support system is key, along with having a life outside of work to avoid burnout.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Go learn about what they do by touring facilities like assisted living, independent living, and memory care. Understand the programs, routines, and that it's essentially a sales position paid on placements. Do an internship or volunteer first before jumping in, as education never stops and you need to know if it fits.
