About Casie

Casie Thurmond, M.S., serves as an Intelligence Analyst with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, where she works closely with detectives in the Special Victims Unit on investigations involving domestic violence, sexual assault, and crimes against children. She specializes in open-source intelligence (OSINT), using social media analysis, online research, and other investigative techniques to identify and locate individuals and vehicles and develop actionable intelligence. Her career in intelligence began after she worked in forensics at the Sheriff’s Office and transitioned into an intelligence position when an opportunity became available.

In addition to her law enforcement responsibilities, Thurmond serves as an Intelligence Analyst with a private security risk consulting firm, where she conducts crime analysis for litigation cases and evaluates whether incidents could have been prevented through appropriate security measures. She also serves as an Adjunct Instructor at St. Johns River State College, teaching an online crime analysis course and bringing practical experience from both the public and private sectors into the classroom. Her professional expertise includes intelligence analysis, threat assessment, security risk assessment, investigations, crime pattern analysis, and digital intelligence research.

Thurmond earned her bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and Public Safety from Vincennes University, graduating Cum Laude, and her Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the University of South Florida while continuing to work in law enforcement. She is a member of the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) and the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA). Thurmond credits a demanding lieutenant and mentor with helping shape her professional development by setting high standards and challenging her to continually improve. Her commitment to continuous learning, mentorship, and analytical excellence continues to guide her work in advancing intelligence-led investigations and supporting public safety.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Casie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the experience and mentorship I received while working at the Sheriff’s Office, particularly under a demanding lieutenant who challenged me to grow professionally and continuously improve. That experience strengthened my discipline, critical thinking, and leadership skills and shaped my commitment to supporting others. Today, I serve as a mentor to new hires, sharing my knowledge and experience, particularly in open-source intelligence (OSINT), including social media analysis and online research.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the field is to embrace the fact that it is both rewarding and ever-changing. I encourage them to remain adaptable, stay committed to continuous learning, and be open to new challenges and opportunities for growth. Building strong professional relationships, seeking mentorship, and having confidence in their abilities can also make a meaningful difference as they develop their careers.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are perseverance, continuous learning, and professional growth. My educational journey was not always easy, beginning with challenges in high school and college, but I remained committed to my goals and ultimately earned a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and a master’s degree in Intelligence while working at the Sheriff’s Office. I believe in continually developing my knowledge and skills through professional training, internships, online resources, podcasts, and active involvement in professional organizations such as the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) and the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA).
