About Cassandre
Cassandre Coles is a biologist and scientist with a career in scientific research and science communication spanning since 2009. She most recently worked as a scientist in the immunology department at Quest Diagnostics, where she supported the development of cell-based assays by performing verification runs, maintaining proper documentation, and ensuring equipment and assay components met standards. Coles holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Oakland University and a PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Illinois Chicago. Since December 2024, she has pursued other projects in her field, including writing short books to help high schoolers understand laboratory techniques and creating Feinstein jewelry with science themes. She also maintains a YouTube channel focused on navigating higher education institutions. Coles attributes her success to being stubborn and independent, values integrity and collaboration in her work, and advises finding healthy work environments while being open to one's brand evolving.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think just being stubborn. Maybe independence due having to take care of myself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be open to your brand evolving.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Try to find a healthy environment, that's really important. ... Find the right environment, a healthy environment, and make sure you talk to people like network and see who's safe to be mentored.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include not having a supportive manager and toxic work environments. Opportunities include turning from bench work to science communication, which is important for engaging audiences.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Doing things with integrity, collaboration. Like, you don't have to do everything yourself, and it's good to incorporate people into your work so they can also get recognition.
