Her Story

About Cassaundra

Cassaundra Johnson is a pharmaceutical and biotech executive with more than two decades of healthcare experience, the last fifteen years of which have been concentrated in market access. She began her career as a registered nurse, working in psychiatric care and home health before transitioning into management and eventually pharmaceutical sales. Her academic foundation includes a nursing diploma from Mercy College of Health Sciences, a Bachelor of Arts in Human Behavior from Grand View University, and a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of St. Francis, which she completed with a 3.89 GPA. She has since built on this foundation with a Certified Managed Care Nurse credential from the American Board of Managed Care Nursing, a Management Accelerator Program certificate from McKinsey & Company, and most recently a Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) certification from the Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where her capstone project examined comparative cardiovascular outcomes between two leading obesity treatments.

Currently serving as Regional Payer Account Director while also participating in a Global Market Access and Pricing rotation at Organon, Johnson works across payers, health plans, PBMs, and state Medicaid programs to secure favorable formulary positioning for her company's biosimilar portfolio. Her rotation has expanded her expertise into international markets such as Canada, the EU5, Brazil, and Japan, where she leads the development of global value dossiers and payer-focused strategy tools. Earlier in her career, she was recognized with Sanofi's Distinguished Account Director of the Year award in 2018, a reflection of the account management philosophy she credits for her ongoing success: identifying each client's specific goals, understanding their internal decision-making structure, and crafting tailored rather than generic solutions.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Johnson is guided by a strong commitment to honesty and integrity, striving to be transparent with clients about what can realistically be delivered. She is a member of the American Association of Managed Care Nurses and volunteers as a childcare worker at Lutheran Church of Hope. Outside of her career, she finds fulfillment in traveling, spending time with family and friends, and performing in community theater productions. Johnson often advises those entering the industry to remain open to continuous learning and to view lateral career moves as valuable opportunities rather than limiting themselves to a strictly upward trajectory.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Cassaundra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my ability to truly understand what each customer is trying to achieve. I take the time to learn as much as I can about their business, how they make decisions, and who their key decision-makers are, so that I can individualize my solutions rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage anyone entering this field to stay open to learning in every role they take on. Advancement doesn't always have to move in a straight, upward line—lateral moves can be just as valuable if they offer the chance to build skills and gain experience that differs from what you've already done.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Our industry has undergone significant consolidation over the past fifteen years, with fewer regional health plans and PBMs as regional accounts increasingly shift under national contractors. I also think there's a broader challenge in how the public perceives U.S. healthcare—while our system operates under different criteria than other countries, it actually provides more treatment options and flexibility than systems that limit patients to only a few approved medications.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and ethics matter most to me professionally—I believe in being upfront about what I can realistically deliver rather than overpromising. Outside of work, I value spending time with family and friends, traveling, and I enjoy amateur acting in community theater.
