About Cate
Cate Cohen is an experienced production professional with more than two decades of experience across event production, theatrical operations, rigging, and technical services. Based in Washington, D.C., she has worked as a production electrician, technician, rigger, stagehand, project manager, and technical coordinator. Her diverse background allows her to anticipate potential challenges, identify practical solutions, and support complex productions from planning through execution.
Throughout her career, Cate has contributed to corporate, industrial, fashion, television, and live-event productions, with expertise in lighting, rigging, carpentry, and technical coordination. As an electrician with Creative Technology, she supports pre-site engineering and documentation while helping lead local crews through lighting hangs and builds. Her experience with Theatrical Resources, PSAV, and IATSE Local 22 has strengthened her ability to coordinate teams, manage projects, and maintain high standards in fast-paced production environments.
Cate is particularly committed to safety, risk management, situational awareness, and effective communication. She brings a problem-solving mindset to her work, drawing on years of hands-on experience to help productions operate efficiently and safely. Her career also reflects her dedication to creating greater opportunities for women and people of color in the traditionally male-dominated production industry. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to community support, the transferable skills I gained through oh there lived experiences,, and a commitment to lifting others up. Over 25 years in the industry, I’ve been guided by a community-focused upbringing influenced by the Riot Grrrl movement and its values of collaboration, inclusion, and empowerment.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to stay open to learning from others and build connections through meaningful dialogue and shared experiences.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay open-minded, develop both soft and technical skills, and remain willing to learn from others. Be curious, adaptable, and never underestimate the value of collaboration.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges is that the field remains male-dominated. However, there are growing opportunities as more women enter production roles, including work as electricians and in theater and music touring. This shift is creating greater representation and new opportunities for women in the industry.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Safety and risk management are among the most important values in my work life. As an electrician, especially in event settings, I prioritize careful planning, communication, and coordination to ensure everyone stays safe while managing multiple moving parts.
