Her Story
About Catherine
I was born in Roanoke, Va., lived in Charlotte for ten years, then finally made my way back to the mountains with a move to Asheville in the late 90"s. I've always loved the outdoors and naturally love hiking as well as swimming, cycling, fishing, skiing, and of course gardening. I also find great joy in beautifying anything and everything when given the opportunity. Making it more functional at the same time is just the icing on the cake!
I had a cheesecake and truffle business (hobby, really) for a short period of time and was amazed at how beautiful food can become if given just a little more attention. The taste still has to exceed the beauty though, otherwise the beauty is simply a disguise instead of an enhancement. The same goes for food in general. I love to cook when I have the time and if I can make it beautiful, even better. The scene of the young maiden (Scarlett Johansson) beautifully arranging the simple family meal on a platter reminds me of myself at that age. Of course she would then go on to notice the change of light in the studio if the windows were cleaned (later in the movie). You artists out there know what I'm talking about.
Basically, in my spare time, when I'm not in my garden (or taking part in my other hobbies), I am busy working on my own interiors. I have done several renovations and really enjoy the transformation. Naturally, I have a long list of things to do in my own home and no shortage of ideas. I have found through the years that an item or style well-chosen is timeless. With that premise in mind, I have never tired of any of my choices in interior design.
All in all, my greatest achievement has been raising two wonderful girls who are healthy and happy.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I have a true passion for adding beauty and function in all areas of life- particularly in the areas of landscape and interior design. Being surrounded by beauty not only enhances the quality of one's life, it also serves as an inspiration to reach higher as an individual. When function is added, purpose and efficiency increase, completing the circle of wellbeing. Creating beautiful and functional surroundings for my clients not only provides them with a space to find rest, creativity, and peace of mind, but also a place in which they may move more freely and accomplish everyday tasks with greater ease. In the landscape, this goes from beautiful combinations of color, texture, and scent to having a better walkway, more privacy, or something as simple as shade from a tree in the heat of summer. With interiors, this includes more invigorating or calming colors, appropriate adjustments in lighting tones, textures that welcome and embrace, as well as better traffic flow throughout the home, reduction in clutter, pieces with multiple functions, and many other items which can improve the efficient running of the home. My being personally aware of both sides of the coin provides my clients with a multifaceted solution to their individual challenges. Working with both interiors and exteriors also provides continuity for the entire home place, Each project is uniquely tailored to each client's needs. Nothing is ever cookie cutter, always custom designed. When concentrating only on one aspect of design, whether inside or out, I always keep in mind what is going on with the other spaces. This provides a cohesion that cannot be accomplished otherwise. I often hear my clients comment on how passionate I am and how they see that I truly care. My goal is for them to be delighted with the outcome. Even if the adjustments are small, the positive effects can always be larger than the initial improvements and can be long lasting. I simply try to ask plenty of questions, listen well, communicate often, and flow with the changes. I want to bring the best out of each space and to give the client something they are thrilled to come home to. I believe they can feel the difference.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what you love and listen carefully when someone tells you you're really good at something. Also, pay attention when something comes easily to you, especially when someone else says, "I
could never do that!"
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Again, do what you love and pay attention to what come easily to you. Look at what life has taught you along the way and go with it! Also, just because you don't look or seem like the average (fill in the blank) doesn't mean it's not the career for you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My greatest challenges in the past have been finding a good labor force. I used to do everything by myself, the transporting, the heavy lifting, digging every single hole for every single plant until I realized I could ask for help, which was quite difficult to find with any consistently. Even when you can find help, the trick is to find those with similar passion and a good work ethic.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, honesty, consistency, loyalty, kindness, excellence, persistence, and balance.
