Known for her creativity, compassion, and commitment to student achievement,

Catherine specialized in motivating students who were reluctant to engage in learning. She firmly believes that students thrive when they know their teacher genuinely cares about them. Throughout her career, she developed innovative and interactive teaching methods to make learning meaningful and enjoyable, including themed lessons, classroom role-playing, costumes, and incentive-based activities such as treasure chests. Her ability to connect with students and foster enthusiasm for learning earned her the respect of colleagues, students, and families alike.

Catherine holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development and a teaching certificate from Hampton University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Television Journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In addition to her classroom service, she has provided instruction to homebound students in each jurisdiction where she has taught school, ensuring educational continuity for learners facing medical or personal challenges. Although retired, she continues to support students through occasional homebound teaching assignments and remains committed to serving her community.

Her legacy is one of dedication, innovation, and an unwavering belief that every child can succeed when provided with encouragement, support, and opportunity.

Ten minutes with Catherine

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance and a commitment to never giving up even during the most challenging moments especially when striving to earn college degrees. I remind myself that difficulties are temporary and that persistence ultimately leads you through them.

I am also deeply grateful for the influence of strong role models in my life, including my high school guidance counselor as well as the unwavering support of my parents, and my aunt. They encouraged me to stay focused, believe in myself, and keep moving forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I have ever received is to stay grounded and stay focused especially during challenging times. Reaching a goal is something we all can be proud of.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never quit. If you really want to reach your goals, reach out to resources such as family, counselors or teachers, ask questions, and start pursuing what you want. Someone will listen and will want to help just ask for the help. Don't let the dream pass because you feel you don't have support. After working in Education for years, I see and know that Schools are some of the greatest support systems.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Biggest challenge in the field of education is ensuring students meet benchmarks and master skills to carry them through life. There is teacher accountability more than ever to ensure students are learning. Having the accountability in place gives struggling students a fair chance to gain more skills during a school year and that is a great thing!

In the field of Education, there are many career opportunities for those seeking degrees in teaching. There is currently a teacher shortage and jobs are waiting to be filled by our future college graduates.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Values most important to me are to work hard, finish what is started, help family and friends whenever possible, and to Never Quit pursuing dreams.
