About Cathleen

Cathleen King serves as EVP of Sales at Wasserstrom in Columbus, Ohio, with responsibility for all sales, marketing, e-commerce, and retail stores. She has held this position for seven years after transitioning from a 25-year career at Cardinal Health in healthcare, where she worked in Master Data, IT, sales, customer service, marketing, and purchasing, ultimately as a VP in sales. King earned an undergraduate degree from Canisius with majors in marketing and HR, followed by a master's in leadership. She attributes her success to hard work, a focus on process improvement, and the support of mentors and champions. King serves on the boards of Freedom a la Carte, which aids sex trafficking victims, Dress for Success, and Best Buddies, as well as the advisory council for the Expert Supply Chain Exchange under the National Restaurant Association. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a pivot that included producing sanitizer and selling millions of masks and gloves, enabling the company to limit layoffs to one round and emerge stronger. She leads a team of approximately 200 people and emphasizes leadership as her primary area of expertise.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Cathleen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, always looking for ways to make things better by improving processes, and having wonderful leaders, mentors, and champions who believed in me and advocated for my promotions.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Know your audience. Some people just want to know what time it is, they don't want to know how the watch is made. Also recognize if someone is a relationship person versus an analytical person.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Build your network and don't be afraid to ask for help from mentors in areas where you feel you are lacking, such as self-confidence or presentation skills. Take on projects or additional responsibilities to stretch yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The industry has a lot of fragmented competition with over 200 competitors on the Giants list, ranging from local dealers to national companies like Edward Don, making it challenging to navigate compared to healthcare which had only three main competitors.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and integrity are the two most foundational values, along with empathy.
