Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cathleen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I've had fantastic mentors and I've had a great network. Some of the critical success factors are just being open, honest, and empathetic. What you see is what you get - I'm tough, but fair. My staffs have always been very loyal to me, and I think it's because I treat them fairly. I also believe in being a continuous learner. Times are changing so fast, if you don't stay on the edge, you're going to get left behind. Having a background in theater has been extremely beneficial because I am not afraid of public speaking, and I think that's been a huge advantage. Most people in technology are pretty die-hard introverts and have a very hard time giving presentations, and that is not something I struggle with.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To not be afraid to take risks. If you get too comfortable, you're going to wake up and be doing the same thing you did 20 years ago. When you get those butterflies in your stomach going 'I don't know if I can do it,' go for it. I like to run to where the fire is. Nothing holds you back more than you do - you hold yourself back.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell them to be a role model and a mentor for other women. Let them know to take risks. I got into this field because I did not see enough women that were able to get into the field and to stay in the field. I felt like it was a great opportunity to be a role model. Where I'm at now, it's important to pull other people forward and to help give them that confidence that they can do it. If they hear somebody else's story, then it helps them realize that they should take that risk, they should try. It's not so much about building my brand, but it's more about recognition and to be able to give back as a mentor, or a coach, or an advisor.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being open, honest, and empathetic is critical to me. What you see is what you get - I'm tough, but fair. I believe in treating people fairly, which is why my staffs have always been very loyal to me. I also believe strongly in giving back, being a role model and mentor for others, and pulling other people forward to help give them confidence. In my personal life, I love to be outside, so I like to golf, I scuba dive, I like to travel, and I love to go to live performances, theater, or music concerts.
