Her Story

About Catrina

I started my career in 2003 with a managed behavioral health organization as a business analyst while I was getting my undergraduate degree in business. In that role, I worked with providers to assess and ensure we were meeting network and quality needs for our members as it relates to behavioral health services. That was my first introduction to managed care, specifically for behavioral health, and it really sparked my interest. From there, I transitioned through several roles including provider relations, project management, and network operations management. After completing both my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I moved into the space I'm in now around 2013, overseeing the management of behavioral health care services with a focus on population health and quality improvement. Currently, I serve as the Director of Behavioral Health and Social Work at Health Plan of San Joaquin in California, where I've been for nearly 3 years. I manage services for both Medi-Cal (Medicaid) and Medicare dual special needs plans for people with chronic illnesses and complex medical needs. My work encompasses mental health, substance use disorder, and applied behavioral analysis services. I work with members, providers, community organizations, and state regulators including the Department of Healthcare Services and the Department of Managed Care Services. One of my proudest achievements has been successfully integrating behavioral health care into health plans twice in the past 6 years. Most recently, I accomplished this within the first 10 months of joining my current organization, and the outcomes have been absolutely amazing with tangible evidence of improvement.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that it can be very exciting and very rewarding. I think if you surround yourself in an organization that promotes growth and improvement, you'll have a really good opportunity to make a positive change.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My mentor Jay Coleman taught me a lot about integrity, the importance of quality improvement, and the importance of integration, and that has stayed with me throughout all of my career. She helped me navigate corporate America and still be a human, if you will. One of the main things I try to drive in my teams is keeping the human in it. I want to make sure that members have everything they need, regardless if we're their health plan, so I make sure my teams understand where their community resources are. My life experiences as a parent have helped me continue to have empathy and compassion for all the people that we serve in our organization and through the communities. Understanding the importance of access to care and promoting support for people who might not seek it on their own has always been important to me.
