Her Story
About Cecilia
I've been working as a photographer and content creator since 2020. I created my own personal brand called 'This is Sessi,' which is my profile on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. I work doing photography and partnerships with different brands, bringing my ideas to life through photos that focus on what the brand has to offer while still maintaining my personal style. I also currently work with a company doing marketing. I came to the United States 12 years ago from Bolivia without knowing anyone or the industry. I worked as a server, then a cashier, then in radio, and then as a TV host in Miami, which opened the doors to do what I'm doing now. What I'm doing right now is what I actually enjoy.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cecilia
01What do you attribute your success to?
Sometimes life puts you in situations where you just need to keep going. My father died when I was young, and it was from one minute to another that my life changed completely, like 100% change. I needed to learn to be way more responsible, way more independent, and then to start working since I was young because it was my mom by herself then. I learned very young to be responsible and understand work values. I think that's one of the major factors, actually. You can't think about, like, oh, poor me - no, you need to keep going, because everything keeps going, and you need to keep going. You need to keep doing the stuff that you have to do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You can do more than what you think. I always try to say that to myself. Sometimes we put ourselves there, like, oh, this is so hard, and people from outside, they're seeing that we're doing so much things, and they see us so high, and we don't see that too often. We need to remember that.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To believe in themselves. I know it sounds cliche, but to believe in yourself. To work for what you really want.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the biggest challenge in the industry of content creators is that sometimes a photographer or any type of art - because at the end of the day, it is very creative, you need to be very creative, and it's artistic in some ways, same as music, same as poetry, same as art pieces - some people don't look at us as important as a job. Because it's artists at the end, and they diminish the value, and it is also work. It also takes time. It also takes even more challenge of getting brand deals and being in the industry and being taken serious about what you do, because it's art. It is kind of hard to explain to the old generation. It's the ones that understand are the people that are in the field, but if you are not in the field, it's kind of hard that they take you serious as a job. Also, in the industry, I feel like a lot of people in the same industry, they gatekeep. They don't want to share contacts, they don't want to share tips, they don't want to share things, thinking that you're gonna take their - there's a lot of gatekeeping, I feel.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being reliable, responsible, focused, resilient, and loyal are the values most important to me in my work and personal life.
