Her Story

About Chandrika

I started my career in 2014, and it's been almost 10 years, though I took a break for my master's in the mid-2019. I've worked across different domains throughout my career - I worked in the healthcare domain at Cigna, in the retail domain at Kroger, and in the IT technological domain in India. I worked as a data analyst for 5 to 7 years, and I love working with data. As machine learning and AI started emerging very rapidly, my interest towards AI and machine learning got more interested, and I shifted my career from data analyst to data scientist, where I can explore data as well as AI. Currently, in my current project, I'm working with fraud detection, which is very much interesting and really helpful for the customers we have. Building AI agents and working with complex data is what's more interesting for me. I'm especially proud of how I helped and transformed the machine learning models, which consumed hours of time and making indecision, and I've transformed the models into more efficient and very effective, which was timed down by seconds.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my parents. I always believed I am somewhere lacking, or I have to do more and more, but my parents believe me, and they encouraged me to pursue my career abroad, overseas, and encouraged me to keep learning and keep moving forward. So, that was my big support.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Most of the younger women are confused. There are a lot of opportunities, very vast opportunities, but especially when they're coming to data and AI, no one knows everything. Every person is growing up and stepping into new opportunities and learning every day as you go. So, don't step backward that you don't know everything with AI, or you don't know how to deal with it. Don't underestimate your voice. Everyone is learning day by day. A lot of young women are in confusion which way to go through. If they're building network and they're making meaningful connections on personal branding or credibility or defining their value, especially in this fast-moving technology, that's what stands out the most. Networking is the most important thing right now in this current world, in this current generation.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In my current career in the banking domain, the biggest challenge would be rapid fraud detection cases, where previously it was manually checking every account and every security, checking all the transactions - historical transactions, previous transactions, and current transactions. That was taking a lot of time. With AI, I have built an AI agent which times down to seconds. It takes every single customer's data and gets through the historical transactions, all the transactions, and suspects if there is any fraud detections, or if there is any scam transactions, or sudden transactions, so it all filters out and gives accurate results with the security policy. Coming to AI side, it's a very good opportunity using it correctly. It's really helpful for us, for every human, as well as dangerous, but it's the way how you use it. Most of the people don't use AI correctly, in the right way. If we use it right way, we can get a lot of problems solved in just more than half of the time - more than 70% of your time is saved. For anyone who is really interested in the technology side, I would say learning AI and machine learning tools would really help them and get their jobs. Most of the jobs are not laid off because of the AI, but when we know how to control the AI agents and how to deal with them, your job is nowhere going. It's right with you.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say, always be respectful. So many women all over the world are maybe lacking with moving forward, and they're in a bubble. I personally got stepped ahead and pursued my career abroad 10 years ago. Most of the women are not confident, and they're backing away. We have to value ourselves, and every single woman should be independent, regardless of their age, and move forward with what they're interested in, not even in the technology side. In every field, they should be confident and move forward.
