Her Story

About Chanel

My experience spans over 20 years in human services, working in various roles across different agencies. Currently, I serve as a success coach at St. Anne's Community. Prior to this, I was a success coach at another agency, and before that I worked as a collaborative care coordinator at a doctor's office. In my current role, I come into my office each day, start getting my day together, often attend meetings with HR, and then spend most of my time sitting outside my office and around the building engaging with employees. There's a lot that employees are facing - they're coming in with their personal problems and bringing them into the job. If I can walk around and be an asset to individuals so they can have some relief throughout the day, having someone that is comfortable and that they know is going to keep their information confidential, that helps alleviate some of the pressures and stress that people are facing. I work with the HR team to help implement new team members and maintain a visible, positive, proactive presence across the organization, working with everyone from senior leadership down to the maintenance staff. A critical piece of my work is being able to work with diverse populations - I have to know how to talk to and work with senior leaders and board members, as well as individuals in roles like CNAs and dining staff. I also serve as a resource, particularly for young women facing domestic violence who are looking for someone they can talk to without judgment. I am currently enrolled in a 6-month certification program to be a certified life coach, and I have already completed my DBA paperwork for my business, which will be called the Empowerment Shift Life Coaching Services.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I don't like to look at challenges as challenges. When individuals come to me facing barriers, I look at that as an opportunity to help them work through their challenges so that they can be successful in their life. The biggest barriers I see, particularly among Black women, include being single mothers - and I can speak to that because I am a single mother. Self-confidence is a very big barrier. Housing and domestic violence often coincide together, because oftentimes they're in the home with the abuser. And then there's career development - how do we get you out of your current role where you're really not making a lot of money? How do we shift the mindset so that you can see that you can go to school to be an LPN, a nurse, or to be a doctor? Those first three topics I listed are often the barriers preventing career advancement.
