Her Interview
Ten minutes with Chanell
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering support of my parents, who ensured I had every opportunity to pursue an education and experiences they themselves may not have had. I have also benefited from the encouragement of my community, which inspired me to give back by creating greater opportunities for the students and communities I serve. Their belief in my potential motivated me to dedicate my career to helping others reach theirs.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to never shrink myself to fit into someone else's expectations. When I hide my talents or diminish my strengths, I deny others the benefit of the gifts I have been given to share. I strive to embrace every opportunity for growth, improve every organization I serve, and leave each place better than I found it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women to define success on their own terms rather than allowing others to determine where they belong or what they are capable of achieving. Be authentic, embrace your unique strengths, and pursue your goals with confidence. The only standard you should measure yourself against is the one you establish for your own personal and professional growth.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges facing education today is the increasing pressure on public education through policies that favor charter and private school systems. At the same time, teacher shortages and relaxed certification requirements have reduced the overall pool of highly qualified educators, creating additional challenges for maintaining instructional excellence. These issues highlight the importance of investing in educator preparation, leadership development, and sustainable strategies that strengthen public education and improve outcomes for all students.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I believe excellence is a continuous journey rather than a final destination, and I am committed to lifelong growth and improvement. I also value creating opportunities for others, particularly students and communities that have historically been overlooked, so they can achieve their fullest potential. Above all, I strive to leave every person, school, and organization better than I found it by fostering meaningful growth, equity, and lasting positive change.
