I've been working in the world of Procurement for 7 years, and I've only been at my current company for a year. What's unique about my journey is that I got into purchasing kind of backwards. I started with corporate collections for 10 years, then moved into sales for 5 years, and then finally got into purchasing and buying. I always tell people I read the book backwards to get a better understanding. My degree is actually in psychology, and it was hard to break through that field, but collections came to me by accident and I fell in love with it. I realized that good communication can go a long way in studying psychology and even in the corporate world. I found it as a challenge, but also a good challenge - once you learn how to talk to people to encourage them to pay a bill, it's easier to encourage them to buy something. Now in my current role as a buyer for a U.S. government contractor, my key responsibility is vendor relationships. The government provides us a project or program, and we have to go out and purchase items to fulfill that project. Communication is key to finding a good vendor, a responsible vendor, and someone that can complete those tasks in a timely manner. I always say it's a glorified window shopper with an extra perk of buying. What I'm most proud of is learning the business without any extra knowledge of it, but getting the trust of vendors and also customers to blend into one. Sometimes it's hard - it's just like a family in a way, with different personalities that you're trying to merge. Once you can get them to open up, use effective communication and trust you, man, the relationship is golden.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

God has ordered my steps. Like I told you before, I kind of got into this industry backwards. I didn't look for it, it just seemed like it fell in my lap, and it was like the perfect placement at the perfect time. So, later in my life, I just trust God's lead, and God guides me into the next step, and then it always seems to work out perfect. What I'm most proud of is just learning the business without any extra knowledge of it, but getting the trust of vendors and also customers to blend into one. Sometimes it's hard - it's just like a family in a way, with different personalities that you're trying to merge. Once you can open them up with effective communication and trust, man, it's awesome.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Remember you are a bridge. So keep a mentor in front of you to help, guide and teach you, and keep a mentee behind you to share what was given to you. Your help, your character and influence will go into places where you cannot go physically. We all need each other and so make it count.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be scared. Like I said before, trust God to lead you and guide you. Like I tell my daughter all the time, he doesn't make any mistakes. We try to rush the process and try to rush to be promoted, rush to get the bigger job. What's the process - learn all you can learn, and be a team player. It will pay off.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Sometimes I don't think women get the chance. A lot of times, when we get in, we have to fight to get in, but I just wish they give us an opportunity more. Trust us, just like anyone else. Just give us a chance.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

There's no "I" in team. We cannot operate in this world, group or relationship alone. If we can work together, then the reward is always greater when you can share it.
