Her Interview
Ten minutes with Charmaine
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to dedication, perseverance, continuous learning, and a genuine commitment to serving others. Throughout my more than 32-year career in federal government and my work as a consultant and executive coach, I have learned the importance of recognizing people's strengths, building collaborative relationships, and creating opportunities for others to thrive. My life experiences, including navigating the responsibilities of being a single mother and caring for a child with Type 1 diabetes, have also strengthened my resilience, compassion, and perspective. I believe that authenticity, character, and a willingness to grow are essential to achieving meaningful and lasting success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Gratitude, attitude, and humility will take you further than any title ever will. Always be willing to learn, grow, evolve, and embrace change. Learn something new, different, and exciting. Follow your passions and you will find your true calling in life. Have faith in knowing that God is always with you and you can accomplish anything in life you put your heart and soul into. Challenge yourself to enter rooms, places, spaces, and cultures that are unfamiliar. You can learn from other peoples cultures and backgrounds. Never ever give up because it's not how you start is how you finish. Failure is just a lesson to learn, it's not the end of your journey. You are never too old to begin again. Shine bright, be the light. Different is okay. Show up excited, and prepared. It is powerful to know what a smile, a hug, and a firm handshake can do. Never compromise your values, integrity, and character. Listen more than you speak, and listen to understand, not to judge, criticize, or evaluate. Demonstrate genuine love and kindness and stay true to yourself.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to be themselves and bring their whole selves to the table, including their experiences, knowledge, and wisdom. Show up every day being true to who you are, and remain grounded in your character and values. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and each person has their own superpower. Recognize your strengths, embrace what makes you different, and have the confidence to contribute your talents. Your experiences and individuality are valuable assets that can help you grow, lead, and make a meaningful difference.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, honesty, character, authenticity, compassion, and service are the values that guide my work and personal life. Grounded in my Christian faith, I believe in treating people with dignity, practicing kindness, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. I am passionate about helping others recognize their strengths and reach their full potential, particularly those who may be overlooked or facing challenges. I also believe in leading with vulnerability, maintaining ethical standards, and making a positive difference in the lives of others through mentorship, empowerment, and meaningful service.
