Her Story

About Charmaine

I am a 20-year Air Force veteran who just retired, and I've been coaching for the last 10 years through my business About You Today. As a professional coach and speaker, I initially focused on pouring into military members, but recently I've been branching out into speaking to civilians and coaching for leadership development. In January, I had an opportunity to speak at the Economic Forum in Davos, speaking to leaders and executives. Where I ended in the military was as a senior leader, and a large part of my job was to take care of people - 38,000 people around the globe, both on the professional and the personal side. But when I got out, my focus became just on the personal side. I named my business About You Today because I know a lot of people, especially in senior leader positions, take care of everyone else but themselves. After the passing of my dad, I had to learn the hard way what it was like as an executive to not take care of yourself and make it about you, even if it's just for a moment. That's why I focus on the person.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say that she has all the tools. She has all the tools, because she had a mentor who taught her everything that she needed to know as far as pouring into people's lives. She had an opportunity to see what it is to not pretend to care, but to actually care, because in the business of coaching, you have some coaches who are doing it just because they're good at it. You have some coaches who are doing it for the money, and you have some coaches who are doing it because they're trying to change lives. And when you've been around someone who's doing it because they're trying to change lives, or in the business of changing lives, you know what it looks like. You know what it feels like. And because my young ladies know what that means, and knows what that looks like, they're able to go and pay it forward, because that's the only thing that I've asked them to do. It's to pay it forward.
