Her Story
About Charo
I was born in Mexico and came to America 17 years ago after marrying an American. In Mexico I studied financials, economies, and hospitality. After moving here I attended the Cordon Bleu School in Austin and earned my chef degree and certification as a certified chef. I now work as a corporate chef managing full complex food service operations for two university buildings housing about 1200 students, overseeing dining services, menus, staff, and interacting daily with students to ensure they enjoy their meals.

Ten minutes with Charo
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to living by example, enjoying what I do, and maintaining balance by doing things like hiking that make me feel good outside of work.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Follow your dreams, don't be scared to take on challenges, learn new things every day, try to be the best you can, and enjoy what you do. I came here not speaking English but decided to go to school and become part of this country.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest personal challenge is continuing to enjoy life and honor my late husband after his passing, while taking care of my family. Opportunities include learning something new every day and being open to new opportunities.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family first is very important to me. I also value living by example, being honest, supporting my team especially with family needs, and leading by example in everything I do.
