Ten minutes with Chelsey
01What do you attribute your success to?
My mentor Sean Porrini has been instrumental in my success. He invested a lot in me and was the individual who brought me into the healthcare industry as CFO of a company that oversaw pediatric support. When I came in as assistant controller reporting to a controller, I barely had interaction with him, but he said there was something I demonstrated, a potential and a drive, that he wanted to invest in by putting me in the controller role without really knowing me. I followed him to another organization, a big orthopedic practice, where he brought me in as VP of Finance. When he left, he was the one to recommend me as CFO of the orthopedic practice. He's someone I continue to go to for mentoring advice. He's my big go-to person.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to push the limits. Don't sit in a box. Be willing to roll up your sleeves and get to know things. There's no job that's too big or too small. Make sure that you really understand not just the accounting and finance, but also understand the operations of an organization. My journey has been better with smaller companies who want to try to build up. When I say smaller, it doesn't have to be a mom and pop, but somewhere where there is more control, more involvement in conversations with various department leads, because you can get more exposure in that capacity. Don't be afraid to ask the questions. That's something that I do frequently, even if it doesn't necessarily pertain to accounting and finance. You really have to understand the operations of the business to fully understand the impacts it'll have on your accounting, finance, and RCM department if you're working in healthcare.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Spending time with my 15 yr old son and boxing
