Her Story
About Cherie
I thought I wanted to be an accountant until I realized I didn't care about anyone else's money but my own, so I became an occupational therapist and have been happy for over 10 years. It was occupational therapy and motherhood that led me to Mommy Scrubs, which I founded based on my own lived experience of undressing multiple times at work during my busy work shifts. I designed a patent-pending pump-friendly scrub top to support breastfeeding moms in the workplace to keep us professional and comfortable as we pump at work. I've always had a love for helping others, and I'm intrigued with the ability to work across the lifespan, from neonate all the way through geriatrics. For the past 8 years, I've worked in cardiovascular acute care, which I have come to love, but it's really my love for helping people live their life to the fullest that drives me. I work every Saturday and Sunday at the hospital, which allows me to be home Monday through Friday and be fully present as a wife and mother, giving my full time and attention to Mommy Scrubs. My long-term goal is to become the household name, the go-to postpartum and wellness scrub line, and to continue to empower and support these moms in the workplace by partnering locally and nationally with hospitals and healthcare organizations to serve this underserved community of breastfeeding moms.

Ten minutes with Cherie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think just being grounded in my faith and knowing it will all work out. I'm very grateful and thankful to have a supportive spouse, and I have a great village and community around me, whether it's my sibling, parents, and again, my motivators being my children. I think that's what kind of keeps me grounded, and then just remembering my why. I think that's very important because especially in entrepreneurship, a lot of days, that's like the only thing you have. So you have to stay anchored to the why, and that definitely keeps me going. I am very grounded in my faith, and I truly believe that God has given me the vision for Mommy Scrubs, so He has given me the resources and the provisions, but He's also given me the strength and all of the blessings that he's provided me with, the business, the family, the career, and so he gives me the supernatural strength to do it all, because honestly, I don't know how I do it all.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know who you are, because it's not easy caring for other people. When you're going into a field such as occupational therapy, that's exactly what you're doing - you are caring for other people, problem solving for other people. You have to have a certain level of not just sensitivity and knowledge, you have to have the right attitude, you have to have the right skills, but you have to have a level of compassion as well. You have to really want to help people. And I would say, ask yourself, is this something I would want to do even if I wasn't paid to do it? And if your answer is yes, you're in the right field. You're helping sick people, these people are often sick and recovering, or they experience a life challenge, an illness, a surgery. So you have to meet people where they are and be able to empathize and have active listening, and have the patience and problem solving. And then, of course, depending on the setting in which you work in, I work in cardiovascular acute care, so just high acuity level and being able to respond quickly but calmly and appropriately in those situations.
