Her Story

About Cherrelle

I've been in the multifamily industry for nearly 9 years now, starting in September after I transitioned from hospitality management where I worked in spas, hotels, and resorts. I was looking for a new job and thought working at an apartment complex would be really cool, and the first place I applied to gave me the job. It was a beautiful two-phase property, and most of the people there were new too, which made me feel great. As a community manager for the past 3 years, I manage the finances, do paperwork like reclasses and accruals, manage the leasing staff and maintenance staff, ensure occupancy is where it needs to be, conduct tours showing people apartments and amenities, and manage CapEx projects like playground renovations or balcony and window replacements. I'm currently temping as an acting community manager while I'm in between full-time positions. What I love most about my job is making people happy in their current home, showing them a new place, seeing their face light up when they can envision themselves in the space, and being their support system along the way. It wasn't always easy - I cried a couple of times as a leasing consultant when I was yelled at or had to deal with sewage running down the street - but now I love every moment of it and I'm very happy to be in the field.

Ten minutes with Cherrelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say it's definitely my personality - being outgoing and being kind to others. You just never know who you're gonna meet, and having a smile on your face can make all the difference. They say if someone is having a bad day, just you smiling at them could change their whole day. So just being a good person, period, talking to other people - I love meeting people, and I think that's what helps me to be successful in the industry so far.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say just to learn as much as you possibly can and ask as many questions as you can to have a better understanding of the whole process. I feel like when you know the end goal, you're able to do your job a lot better. There's no wrong question, there's no bad question, so ask as many questions as you can.
