About Cheryl

Cheryl W. Browne, CPSM, is a communications, marketing, public relations, branding, and creative professional with a career deeply connected to the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. She currently serves as Creative Brand Manager at W.M. Jordan Company, where she oversees corporate branding, communications, public relations, creative initiatives, press and promotions, advertising, and marketing support for business development. She has been with W.M. Jordan Company since 1998, progressing through Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Manager roles before becoming Creative Brand Manager. Her work has supported the company's growth and included proposals, presentations, award submissions, digital media, social media, trade-show materials, corporate communications, and branding. Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Waldorf University and previously studied architecture. Her combination of communications expertise and exposure to architecture and construction has shaped a career focused on translating complex business work into compelling brand and marketing communications. She earned her Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) credential through the Society for Marketing Professional Services in 2004 and has held numerous leadership positions within SMPS, including President of the Virginia Chapter from 2013 to 2014, for which she received the SMPS Virginia Chapter's Marketer of the Year award. She currently serves as Chair of the Southeastern Regional Conference Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Society for College and University Planning. Cheryl believes professional success is built through persistence, consistency, collaboration, and helping others grow. She encourages young women to embrace continuous learning, pursue lifelong development, and work with organizations whose values and culture align and provide genuine support. She is also deeply committed to ecological stewardship, conservation, and community service through her church's Care for Creation Committee. This group's initiatives range from local projects such promoting wildlife biodiversity through native plantings and teaming with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to build Living Shorelines, national work such as clean-water access for the Navajo Nation, and global support such as providing trees to farmers in Kenya to reduce carbon and rebuild forests. Her professional and personal philosophy reflects a commitment to helping people and organizations grow and thrive while using communications and creativity to create meaningful and lasting impact.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Cheryl

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to consistently showing up, being persistent, working with great people, and helping others grow and develop. I believe that success is not only about individual performance; it is also about supporting the people around you and creating opportunities for others to become stronger professionals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Never stop learning, network with those people who you admire, and never be the smartest person in the room.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women is to take advantage of every opportunity to learn, grow and stretch yourself. Build relationships and talk with people. Pursue lifelong learning and remain open to developing new skills and perspectives throughout your career. I encourage women to find supportive organizations whose culture and values align with their own, because having the right environment can make a significant difference in professional growth.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the construction industry is the talent pipeline and shortage of skilled trade workers. At the same time, this creates an important opportunity to invest in developing well-rounded construction professionals. Internship programs can play an important role in addressing that challenge by giving emerging professionals meaningful exposure to the industry. W. M. Jordan Company's internship program started in 1996. Today, the program supports approximately 40 interns annually, helping develop the next generation of construction professionals.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Ecological stewardship and conservation are important values to me. I care deeply about protecting the environment, promoting native plantings, and supporting wildlife biodiversity. I also value my family and the time I spend with my four grandsons. These values influence how I approach both my professional responsibilities and my life outside of work.
